Re: Hiking ghost story
Experienced snow travellers ripped their sleeping bags open and ran in a blind panic, naked through the snow, dying of hypothermia. Sounds perfectly logical. ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

Re: PLB Deal
Good chart. I guess maybe I should point out that although the Aquafix and Terrafix PLB units are the same (except for the color), the interface cable that comes with the two PLB's it is slightly different, and the Aquafix comes with a mount if you want to put in your boat, vehicle, etc. The Terrafi...

PLB Deal
There's a site that has the ACR Aquafix 406 with internal GPS for $477.74. They list one price, but sent me a link with a lower price when I wrote to them. By comparison, REI has the ACR Terrafix 406 with internal GPS for about $595.38 (LA County sales tax included) out the door if you do store pick...

Kelty sounds like a good bet. You might talk to REI. Couldn't hurt. Jansport still supports e-frame packs too. I recently got new shoulder straps for my 1986 classic Jansport D2. Haven't used it since '01, but keeping it serviceable "just in case." I understand for really heavy loads on tr...

Re: San Gabriel water fall watching
Definitely good pix. So, I've been to Trail Canyon many times and know right where TC falls is, but where are Josephine Falls? I'm not familiar with those. And the Fusier tunnel? I know where Fusier Canyon is, but not the tunnel.

Re: Strawberry Peak
I screwed up a few years ago on the normal West Ridge route and wound up a bit on the N. Face. Don't know about climbing routes all the way from Straberry Potrero, but the rock looks pretty solid, which is really nice compared to the crappy DG that most of the stuff around here is made of.

Re: 20080217 Big Iron with intent to go up Baldy
Did you think access from trail near the eagle mine ( on topo map ) would be to thick with brush and rocks? The old trail shown near the Eagle Mine isn't there any more. Probably hasn't been passable since the 50's or 60's, maybe longer. A lot of those old mines are from circa 1890. You can get a r...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)
Your description agrees/confirms with how I have envisioned it. I was most uncertain with the upper part of the section from Switzer down to JPL. That upper section above Oakwilde but below Switzer Falls is probably the least used section of the whole Gabrieleno trail. A lot of people hike to the b...

Re: 20080217 Big Iron with intent to go up Baldy
...issues I can see: 1. Access. Can you drive up Coldwater Canyon to Widman Ranch area? Unless things have really changed, you're not even supposed to walk up that road. You can get there via the Heaton Flats Trail. You would proceed just as though you were going to do Iron Mtn but instead of going...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)
Interesting. That's often done as a two or three day BP. I've done all of those sections separately, but not as a day hike. I'll bet you could do it if you got an early start on a nice long Spring day and travelled light and fast. I haven't got any hard info not having it done it as a day hike, but ...

Re: Josephine Peak via West Ridge
Looks interesting. Haven't tried that SW ridge approach up Josephine. I'll be curious to see your TR. It probably is best with a car shuttle, but I've done the loop up Colby, over Strawberry, and then out at Red Box more than once. I've always managed to hitch hike. Yeah, I know, hitchhiking. In LA ...

If you decide to go up Mt. Wilson, don't look for "Chantry Flay." Try "Chantry Flat." Sorry to mislead you good folks. (I hope that, by pointing out my error, I can avoid a public flaying.) No problem on the spelling. Just try to hike so as not to get on the evening news....

Good info.
How was the poison oak along Bear Creek? I was there maybe 5 years ago and it was bad. I haven't been there since the big rains of 2005 which may have scoured things a bit.

I was up there yesterday 02/16/08 and the Mount Waterman ski area appeared to be open. I noticed all the cars parked there as I passed by on my way to Islip Saddle. Unfourtantly though, the road was open only to the gate just beyond the Snowcrest ski area, just in case anyone was wondering  ....

Re: Twin Peaks - Hard Routes
Last time I was down in Bear Canyon (5 years ago?) where the trail drops in from 39 via the saddle by Smith Mtn, there was a lot of poison oak. Bring your TechNu. :) Late winter/early spring (April) would probably be best for this one, I would think. Chaparral gets really hot in the sun. May could g...

Re: Mt Waterman open???
Twin Peaks should still be good, particularly if you're coming from the South. There's not going to be anyone S of the summit of Waterman. All approaches and exit routes would be open, including ones going via the intermediate saddle between Waterman and the twins. Christopher Brennan uses that sadd...

Be careful out there. Ice accidents do claim people every year. Not trying to be sensationalistic, and I'm certainly not the expert, but don't think of crampon use as a trivial matter either.

Re: Mt Waterman open???
I was up snowshoeing in the area last Saturday (2/9). I talked to several Waterman ski patrollers. They said that they're opening this weekend.
By the way, the 2 wasn't open all the way to Waterman last weekend. It's probably open now, but maybe it's worth confirming.
