Re: Vincent Gap Trail (Mt. Baden-Powell)
I'd say it's still too early. You'd need an ice axe and crampons and the experience and training to use them.

Re: Where the heck is Mt Chapman in relation to Timber Mountain?
Some people, or so I've heard, call the Devil's Backbone portion of the Notch to Baldy hike the "fake" DB because of the "other Devil's Backbone" that one goes over when one comes in via Pine and Dawson. Apparently some feel that the backbone on the northern approach is the real ...

Wow. Pretty serious. Plastic boots, crampons, ice axe, pickets, both snowshoes and skiis -- the whole nine yards. That's pretty out there for the Army which usually lags 10 - 20 years behind civilian climbing technology. The thing that surprises me is that they appear to be wearing their regular cot...

Yes, but wouldn't you be an hour ahead in a week or two thereafter when we hit the old DST cutover date?
I guess you could just adjust it again. LOL. Pretty high tech. We've got this vast, sophisticated internet out there, but we're still setting the time by hand.![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Yeah, pretty mind-boggling. Personally, I think automotive identification is far easier than flower identification. :D The problem with common names for plants is that they vary from guide to guide and region to region. If you were to travel about the country, you'd probably find at least three oaks...

How come the forum is still on Standard Time? Is the software using the old dates for DST? Will it correct itself in a week or so?

I was in the Chantry Flats/Big Santa Anita Canyon area today. The snow level was low, maybe 3000 to 3500' but minimal accumulation. Saw some really cool rainbows. Was definitely cold. Probably topped out in the 40's. Supposed to be down to mid 30's at 2500' overnight.

Re: Where the heck is Mt Chapman in relation to Timber Mountain?
Chapman is an older name for Timber. There's a metal gizmo embedded in a tree there that says "Chapman" on it. Chapman was a person who was pretty well known in that are if I remember correctly. The upper trail in Icehouse Canyon, the one that goes through Cedar Glen camp is called the &qu...

I wonder if it hardened up after they started crossing it? They said "experienced hikers," but I'm not sure that they're super experienced if they want to cross ice in steep terrain w/o gear. That kind of sucks that SAR told 'em to turn back and they didn't and had to call SAR back...

I was up there a month or so ago with a Boy Scout troop. It's not that bad this time of the year, although I think it would be baking in the summer. There's a little creek flowing down the middle.

NOTE: If anyone knows the name of this peak, or has ideas for a name for it, go for it. Might as well give it a name instead of the boring and depressing "Pt 3100" or whatever it may be. Or "Mini-Burro", which also kinda sucks. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/...
