Re: Holy cow, that's HAWT!
I remember the arclite fireball while Bert was cleaning/priming or whatever he was doing to his MSR white-gas stove on top of Harwood, December 15th. Momentary flashburn. Almost melted his vestibule, hehe .. Not particularly impressed with white-gas stoves for applications is SoCal. Have you ...

Re: Holy cow, that's HAWT!
Yeah they're pretty nice. Other things I like about them: -You can pour in or pour out as much fuel as you want to, taking only as much as you need. You can also open the lid and see how much fuel there is left. -They work well in high altitudes, some of the cartridge stoves start crapping out above...

Waterman hasn't been operated in the last several years although I think they did open a few days this year.

Re: What Beautiful Plant Is This?
The best use I've found for that plant is for use in the campfire. When burned, it produces a lovely scent. I always make sure to inhale deeply to ensure I get the full experience. Let me tell you, a lungful of this stuff will make you completely forget your everyday worries.

I've spent many a night under the stars, but nary a nibble. There are some bears, but very low threat level. Even though bears aren't a big problem, I always do something with my food. I myself use an Ursack, some carry bear canisters (which I find to be cumbersome and heavy), others just suspend th...

Yeah, and all that hiding in caves from the mastodons and sabertooths was a real downer. But let me tell you that the ski conditions were really good back then.

I switched over the my USGI canteens, usually 1qt collapsible "E" canteens. I've got one of the standard 1 qt USGI canteens with steel cup and ALCE compatible case, but what the Sam Hill is an "E" canteen? Hmm. Thanks, Google. I guess you mean: http://www.actiongear.com/agcatalo...

Re: LA 16.2 mile hike with 7445' elevation gain
Easy to determine the truth: Grab your GPS, hike the route, and then give us the report! :) I suspect that the "missing" portion may be in transit between stairways. If you've ever spent much time in Silverlake you know how steep the streets are there. I would think that a lot of elevation...

Why, thanks, guys. We went to Hawaii for two weeks. Sorry, not going to do a full TR. We did do some hiking in Haleakela NP on Maui and in the Alakai "swamp" on Kauai (it's really more of a higher altitude rain forest). We had a really great time. Is she a hiker? Her famous q...

Re: Mt. Humphreys
Depends on the year. I went up in May a few years ago and was fine. Snow was light. It's actually a fairly easy hike because you can drive so high. I summited by about 10:00 AM. Worthwhile summit by the way. I then went via trail to a saddle between Fremont and Aggasiz (if my memory is serving me we...

Rick: I appreciate your comments. I don't think a lot of people realize just how dangerous falls can be and just how serious ice axe & crampon use is or that a self arrest is a feat of athleticsm not a given. Not to pick on anyone, but sometimes I hear people talk about renting crampons as thoug...

Re: Camelbak malfunctions
Yeah, Camelbak's have their problems. In really cold wx, it doesn't matter how much insulation you put on them; they freeze. Better off with a nice wide mouth Nalgene. :) The water can taste a little plasticy if left in a Camelbak for a while. Something's clearly getting into the water. For day use,...

Re: Mt. Waterman Trails (from Buckhorn or Three Points)
Waterman tops out at 8000', so I would think that it wouldn't be too bad. However, I haven't been up since mid February, so my info is an educated guess. It is N facing and shady, so you would definitely have patches, potentially icy ones. There's really only one trail (that I know about) to the top...

I don't approve of such behavior; you miss too much of the good scenery. I limit my magazine reading to white out conditions. Pretty much nothing to see then anyway. Or when I'm belaying someone.

What a totally retro crack up. Gotta love those techniques. Harness? Nah, I just run the rope between my legs.
Pretty cool to see Harwood in the clip. Looks pretty much the same to this day.

Way too close of a call there, bro!
Somtimes (if we survive) it's those close calls that really cause us to start learning and doing things more safely.

I gotta laugh. It was warm sunny weather until about 2 weeks ago when we got a little snow -- that was the day of my bachelor party and we had to move it indoors. Re: Water filters
AW, Not sure which bottle you bought, but probably the Katadyn Micro Filter Water Bottle based on the price. It looks like a pretty good one particularly since the filter element is replaceable. As long as you are filtering clear water, the filter should last a while. You could also gather untreated...

There's going to be some ice up there. Bring your ice axe and crampons and know how to use them. Already one death in that area this year due to a slip in icy terrain. Others have been injured. I've been reading about multiple SAR missions because people underestimated how icy the conds would be up ...

Yeah, I'm kind of down on stretchy anything from pockets to bungies. Stretchy means, "I'll be the first part of your pack to fail." Like the pack, bro. Those to straps across the back look good for securing gear like snowshoes to the outside of the pack. Do you know the cu in off the top o...

I actually had to Climb from Dawson saddle back up to the ridge because I left my Ice Axe under a tree when I put my crampons on ...... another 700 ft gain and drop. D Ouch. Awesome!
And don't forget that extra 300' (2000+2000+1200+1100=6300). That drop down the S face of Dawson is disheartening. All that work and then you drop and have to regain it again. I remember looking at that drop and saying to myself "you've got to be kidding."
