Re: Ticks
I got bit this year. I broke the head off trying to pull it out. Went to the doctor just to make sure, he said there was nothing to really worry about unless it gets super swollen. He told me lyme disease wasn't a problem out here. A doctor 14 years ago pulled one out of my head and gave me antibio...

Very cool. Hope it's a good turn out.
What time will people be actually at the Narrows. I live fairly close -- it would be out of the way to go to Sport Chalet.

What attracts you to Josephine? 1) It's less than an hour's drive. 2) I often hike alone and there is usually someone else up there either hiking or biking in case of emergency. But there is also solitude if you want that. 3) It gives me an 8 mile hike w/2000'gain. 4) I love the view when there is ...

me and my brother rode our beach cruisers from Huntington Beach to Long Beach, then hopped on the Metro Trains and ended up on Lake St in Pasadena. Hi everyone, I plan on camping at Guffy Campground (Blue Ridge) in about two weeks :D . I am considering doing one of these two hikes, the North Devil's Backbone trail to Pine Mountian, Dawson Peak, and to Baldy or heading down to Fish Fork and the Sheep Mountian Wilderness. Has anyone done either ...

Here's an interesting thread about rattlers from the SJ board:

Apparently rattlers' venom is becoming more neuro-toxic. Oh, joy.

Re: Yucca in water
Where was that photo taken? If it's in a seasonal stream or in a stream that flows much less most of the year, the yucca could have gotten established and then just "hangs in there" during those limited times that the water is high. Yucca don't normally grow in stream beds, thank God.

This must be the "year of the Yucca." There are blooming Yuccas ALL OVER THE PLACE. Even friends of mine who aren't mountains people are commenting "hey what are all of those?" as we drive by hillsides with wild vegetation. There are so many of them right now.

We came thru Idlehour 2 weeks ago on a Back pack trip there was plenty of P-Oak in camp area. But you could easily stay clear of it in the camp areas. The water was flowing good. Bigger problem was Skeeters...around dusk and dawn they were hungry. The trail is passable but you need to be careful in...

406, there are a few big washouts. I believe once those are clean, they can open it up and plow it while it's open in the winter, allowing full east-west access. So I hope. Gas saving right there. I really wish they'd rebuild R39 all the way, and friggin' open Williamson rock back up. Sweet Jesus. ...

Re: Fire above Baldy Village
I suspect a lot of these shortcuts are done on the way down. Then again, sometimes the trails are built for a low grade as compared to built for erosion, and then contribute to erosion via landslides, etc. I take the trail but there are times of swtichbacks from hell that I am looking for an escape...

Re: Fire above Baldy Village
There will be more erosion due to bare slopes but not due to hikers. In an ideal world I'd agree. But the truth is hikers cut switchbacks and the less brush there is the more likely they'll do so. They'll go straight up the hill and come straight down the hill making 2 new use trails that criss cro...

It's a bummer is when nice trees get burned. Those don't come back quickly -- if they do come back. There are hikes in the Angeles where there are old, bleached stumps and stuff but not one single living tree. :( The real bummer is the 12 or so months that the forest service will keep hikers out to ...
