Has anyone been on the Tom Sloane Trail itself lately? How's it looking? I think I know the answer (overgrown and next to non-existent), but hope springs eternal.
Has anyone been on the Tom Sloane Trail itself lately? Not the trail from Tom Sloane Saddle to the Dawn Mine, but the trail from Tom Sloane Saddle east over to the Mt. Lowe area.
Excellent. Thank you. I'll check it out when I get time. On other fronts, I had heard Garmin's older product, Mapsource was actually simpler to use than their current software, Basecamp. Mapsource appeared to no longer be available on Garmin.com, so I tried to get Mapsource from download.cnet.com. I...
Risking bringing up some bad memories, here are a couple of GPS discussions from about 5 years ago... https://eispiraten.com/a ... hlight=gps https://eispiraten.com/a ... hlight=gps These had been preceded by some moronic discussions narrated by FIGHT ON, which I didn't bother looking for. Brrrrr T...
Still officially closed as of this writing (although a lot of people are just saying "screw the nanny state" and doing it anyway). I haven't heard of any plans to re-open it. Maybe someone else has updates?
That's really counterintuitive. One would think that a GPS would gather a single set of data points and then compute both the odometer and track from that single data set.
The trip odometer and track log distances are different because they record at different time intervals. Well, if there were two different sampling routines going on, then you'd expect that sometimes the odometer would be greater and that other times the track would be greater. But that's not the c...
Thanks for the analysis, HJ. I've wondered why the trip odometer is always longer than the track reported mileage. Even though the tracks do wander, they are usually close enough to be useful for back tracking or planning. Discrepancies bug me, but let's keep things in perspective. Take a look at t...
She's getting big all right. She pooped out on a recent hike, and I carried her up hill for three miles. Ouch. Of course now that she's older, she can prepare my favorite (ahem) "gourmet" lunch. :) https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Oh4bL_Mq3T0/Uq1dIVmRDcI/AA...
I got a GPS for Christmas and went on my first hike with a GPS on Jan. 1. Thank you to everyone who gave me input. OBSERVATIONS 1. There does seem to be a loss of detail (and therefore an under-reporting of mileage) in the process of saving a track. At the end of my hike, my "odometer" rea...
Matt made that one? Nice map. I did "Fire Road West" (there's a sign on La Tuna Canyon Road that actually says "Fire Road West") a couple of years ago. It's overgrown but mostly followable with some poison oak, BUT as mentioned it's no longer in service and someone has placed a l...
Interesting. What is not clear is whether or not the PCT will be subject to seasonal closure. PCT "kick off" is in late April, which would put most of the through hikers in the Williamson Rock Area in May, possibly June. A closure that is in effect through August means that for practical p...
Interesting. Old cabins I suppose. There's still a lot of stuff just east of there in Coldwater Canyon. It used to be they had no problem with hikers transiting, but I guess some problems must have occurred. The road down Coldwater is now closed to hikers. Weird too. There can't be much traffic. It'...
I think it's just luck with banana slugs. They are huge, colorful, and uber cool. Your kids would probably like them better than those darned trees. "who cares about some dumb trees, dad?"
