Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek

Does sound kind of weird that neither dog nor man has been found. A little sparse on the details at this point though.

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

Well, I don't know anything about "Agenda 21" (is it related to Area 51?), ;) but clearly if there are maps being drawn and mock ups of proposed closure notices then there is a serious closure discussion occurring. That said, I don't believe that any "go" decision has been made o...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

That "sign" was posted on Facebook. It's not a real sign. It appears to be a mock up put together as part of a proposal.

Not sure what to think, but it does cite a Forest Closure number.

He's a gourmet. I'm mean it's not like he's going to just eat the first one that comes along. Heck no. He's looking for something light, yet refreshing, perhaps some Latin-Asian fusion, spicy, yet understated.

That's cool that the little spring has water even in this dry year. It seems pretty reliable even though it never flows much more than a trickle.

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

I don't think we should be spreading rumors either -- hence my post. I was hoping someone could post something solid.

And "closing" Eaton will be oh-so-highly effective I'm sure. But first we should put up a sign that says "please obey all signs".

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

The rumors are flying fast and furious that there will be some kind of closure imposed by the Forest Service in Eaton Canyon effective July 1, 2014, presumably in the area where people keep getting themselves killed. Details are sketchy (pretty much non-existent). Anybody got anything solid on this?...

Try posting at SummitPost, in the CA forum. Lots of locals on there, and maybe someone would be willing to run a mission for you. If you don't have an account, I can post a link to this thread if you'd like. Ah! Now, I hadn't thought of that. I've posted stuff on the local LA forums, High Sierra To...

Re: Lost & Found

In case people don't know what I mean by a Knaack tool box, this is a big, honking tool chest, the kind that gets left at a job site. I think they're about 4 1/2 feet wide and maybe 3 1/2 feet tall. Big . I have no idea how they got these things up there (there are two of them), even with mules. htt...

I saw one land a couple of years ago in Victory Park although I don't think the city condones the practice. I think you basically have to flout the law to do it nowadays.

Re: Lost & Found

Pretty much a long shot, but if anyone is heading to Charlotte Lake (just off the JMT near Kearsarge Pass), I lost a man's wedding ring there this past Sunday. It's titanium (silvery in color), so no great dollar value, but of course there's sentimental value. I camped at the west end of the lake ju...

Mike, Take a look at this map . There are four principal routes to Little Jimmy: 1. From Islip Saddle via the PCT ( green ). 2. Via the service road ( gold ). 3. From Crystal Lake via Windy Gap ( purple ). 4. The short cut which goes from the point on Hwy 2 closest to Windy Gap, more or less directl...

Been all right, but haven't done much hiking since moving down to the OC. I was pretty spoiled living 10 minutes from Angeles National Forest all those years.

Wife and daughter are out of town right now, so doing more hiking -- and more posting. :)

Re: Pacific Crest Trail (Cajon - Little Jimmy - Soledad)

In order to do the PCT before the "window" closes (i.e. the snows set in come fall), PCT hikers need to do something like an average of 20 miles per day with a full pack. Coming up Baden-Powell on a 20 mile day with a full pack is enough to put anybody in a bad mood.

I once cut down Coldwater, and there were people back there staying in the cabins and they were "plinking".

Drought, Fire, and Stoves (How NOT to be on the 11:00 News)

We're having some really serious fire weather right now. No matter where you go, I'd encourage you to skip wood fires. But what about backpacking stoves? I've written a article that looks at each class of backpacking stove and evaluates it from a fire safety perspective. Have a look if you have a ch...

Re: Tom Sloan Trail

Thanks, Rico.

Off my list for now since I'll be taking my daughter.

It was a mess back in the 80's the first time I did it. In the 90's someone reworked the trail, but it wasn't used much. The Station Fire then really messed it up.
