Re: Snow Creek to Pt 4460

Yeah, sometimes they do seem heavy handed. The story is that they've in effect arrested people in Section 28 (public land). I wasn't there, but that's what has been said. I hope the current lease renewal process makes things clearer for all.

Black Friday Baldy

I was on Baldy yesterday. Lovely day. Very nice in the sun, a bit cool in the shade. I was with my daughter, age 5, who likes to climb on everything , so I didn't summit. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fbvREZ7VNvE/VHmlhMQJkyI/AAAAAAAA6sE/aKpOw0lnJr8/s912/DSC00484.J...

Re: Snow Creek to Pt 4460

I am not sure it is worth the potential hassle A number of climbers have been going east of the DWA property and ascending the upper reaches of Snow Creek to San Jacinto Peak. Arduous, but legal. The DWA has not been harassing them lately that I know about. I stayed on the PCT. No harassment, but t...

MSR Windboiler – Wind Testing

With their new Windboiler, MSR has definitely done a great job on the "human factors" (better handle, better lid, a cup that's actually useful, more slots so the pot attaches more easily, etc.), but if the Windboiler isn't significantly better than a Jetboil at handling wind, then it's rea...

Re: Snow Creek to Pt 4460

Cool beans Jimbo. How did you super-impose the precise Section locations over the Caltopo satellite image? Pretty slick. Well, first I toggled to the USFS map view which shows the sections. Then I selected the CalTopo option to draw a polygon. I drew the polygon such that it matched the section bou...

Snow Creek to Pt 4460

I finally got over to the Snow Creek trail head of the PCT after hearing so much about it from others. The PCT lolly gags around and goes nowhere fast, but it's an interesting area, worth a visit. I've written up a Trip Report for Snow Creek to Pt 4460 . In the report, I'm very specific about: How t...

Re: TR: Backpacking Channel Islands National Park July 2014

Excellent wildlife shots, especially of the dolphins. yeah, kind of weird about the water. It's like they don't want to say there's water because you'll sue them or something if it turns out that there isn't. I treat official verdicts of "no water" as not being information. In other words ...

Thanks. It was a fun trip, and I think that falls over there is one of the nicer ones in the San Gabs. Wish the road was in a bit better shape, but then I suppose more people would visit.

Re: Lost & Found

Did any female trail runners lose an article of clothing on the PCT going south from the Snow Creek Trailhead? Snow Creek is in the San Jacinto Mountains, a bit far afield from the San Gabriels, but I know of at least one trail runner who posts here who also does trail running out that way. Trailhea...

bamboo trekking pole. nice! Looks like you had a nice time. It was pretty cool. Well, except for how cold and windy it was on Sunday morning. Joycie was NOT happy with that. I carried her for a while, and she perked back up and beat me back to the car. Carrying kids is a trip. On top of Mt. Wilson ...

It's a nice hike, but the road is in really bad shape. High clearance seems like the way to go. I wouldn't even try it with my Honda Accord.

Middle Fork Lytle Creek -- TR

Just a quick trip report from the Middle Fork of Lytle Creek in the San Gabriel Mountains here in Southern California. It's dry out because of the current multi-year drought, but the Middle Fork typically has water, so we thought we'd give it a go before things got too cold for me to take my daughte...

Re: What do you think of smartphone topo maps?

I've got an Android based phone. Seems like Backcountry Navigator is the recommended app; it's what I use anyway. Works well but the battery gets eaten quickly if I'm recording tracks. I also have a Garmin eTrex 20 that I use to record tracks. I really like recording tracks so I can refer to them la...

Re: Kenyon DeVore Trail (Mt. Wilson)

You're welcome.

I just talked to one of the guys who does maintenance over there. He says all the downed trees I reported are gone and that several other improvements have been made, so if anything, the trail should be in better shape than my GPS notes would indicate.

That looks like a lot more water than was there the two times I went up this summer. There was some water at Third Stream Crossing, but it was bone dry at Commanche. My photos are from Stonehouse Crossing. There's probably more water at Stonehouse than Third. I like that trail a lot. The road isn't...

I know HJ has a SummerLite. Do you ever feel claustrophobic or unduly restricted in your SummerLite HJ? I'm a side sleeper, so the Summerlite works for me, and I'm 6'0", 215# (heck, maybe 220# with as much as I've been eating lately). It's a bit tight if I sleep on my back. The materials and w...

I was there in March. I need to run now, but I'll type something up tomorrow. It could be done in a day, but I did it as a backpack because I was with my d...
