Where to take my kids??

So, plan A, Little Lakes up above Rock Creek Lake. Easy 5 miles, beautiful. Problem is we have some possible weather this week and this hike is over 9'000ft. So its time to work on a plan B just in case. I'm hoping for Something in 6000-8000ft range with campsites 2-5mi apart and plenty of water, du...

Re: Backpacking in mid October??

I'm going family backpacking in October also. A little chilly weather is probably not too big a deal for us as long as its not all gloomy and wet. But check out sespe creek. there no real high peaks above it so there's not as much cold wind blowing through from above. it was a very nice hike, mostly...

Re: Swimming Holes

Sespe is beddy beddy nice right now. I understand it dries out in summer but for another month or so it is perrrrfect and it was extremely clean too since you have to hike in. you can swim within a few hundred yards but a mile or two will bring you to some bigger holes. San Antonio creek has some ni...

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

How far up do the kids have to hike to reach snowshoe worthy conditions? I realize the trail is probably packed down but along the sides can we get some decent snowshoeing right from the trail head? or even in the larger canyon area west of the road? I might just ditch work tomorrow and take them up...

Wow Register to Baldy and down the bowl, with Microspikes? Not advisable for us rookies I guess. Great pics, I've been dying to do that route but I figured I would need crampons. Thanks for posting the TR, loved it.

RSS or similar?

I'm new to this site so part of this may be just that I'm not good at finding stuff yet. I notice that some folks seem to know right away when something gets posted. Is there a way to get RSS feeds or something? I'm not seeing it.

Re: Pacific Crest Trail (Cajon - Little Jimmy - Soledad)

After reading through yer "things to be aware of", I was thinking about skipping all that bushwack and staying on the PCT until I come to the backbone trail. We were trying to keep this around 3 days/3nights, no reason to go the hard way. So now I'm thinking Day 1 Three Points to Little Ji...

HJ, I really appreciate all the time you took to put this together for me. Very enlightening indeed. Our plan was to make this a 3-4 day trek, seems doable. 2 of us are what I would call very strong, having recently done cactus to clouds, Big Iron, etc. I'm doing ski hut to Baldy Summit fairly comfo...
