Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Last Sunday we got up Skihut and down to the Notch and there was maybe a 10 minute patch of snow above the bowl. After this weeks sprinkling there might be a dusting up there but I doubt it was much. Maybe somebody else has been up there after the rain.

Re: Ice House Canyon Trail

Went up icehouse to Timber Mountain yesterday. Although I miss the snow, it's been nice lately with perfect conditions in the high country for running. A challenging mix of snow, mud, small icy patches. Never needed my microspikes on this one but i'm glad I had them in case conditions changed.

Re: Gabrielino in a day, or not

Thanks fellas. It was an interesting day for sure but we laughed the whole way, it worked out okay in the end. I always learn something from days like this. It's entirely possible that if we continued on the Gabrielino and ignored the closure that we would have made it just fine. As you guys know, y...

Gabrielino in a day, or not

A friend and I planned to start at Chantry and run the Gabrielino trail to exit in Altadena near JPL some 30 miles later. Sounded good on paper anyway. We got as far as West Fork campground without trouble. After that the trail got a bit dodgy and had us doing a bit of back and forth. We got up the ...

Re: Chapman trail to Big Horn ridge

Hey HJ, thanks! Yeah, we were glad to have our microspikes. I would not call this trail dicey at all though. Chapman was clean and clear, and the trail to Kelly's had snow but if we walked we would have been fine without spikes. A couple people were doing that with no trouble. But microspikes sure m...

Re: Chapman Trail

Chapman snow free. No axe needed to Kelly's camp or bighorn peak. Micro spikes not necessary but recommended between icehouse saddle and Kelly's camp. No snow below the saddle. All trails free and clear.

Chapman trail to Big Horn ridge

Ive gleened alot from this forum. Its time i started contributing more, so heres a start. Quick easy and very fun run today. Icehouse trailhead at 6am, mild conditions and only a few cars in the lot. Mild conditions for sure, barely enough to warrant a windshirt and gloves, but some brisk wind highe...

So for me, when a new thread is started, I get An email automatically. I think this is referred to as "following" the forum. however if somebody responds to an existing thread then I'm not notified. So if I post in this thread about the very nice wind shell I found at Bonelli, nobody will ...

We're running it, R2R2R actually which is crazy for me. I won't be as fast as you, just gonna try and survive it. Re: High altitude running during the "winter" months

I probably need to look into a new shoe and some of them hillsounds for winter running, my usual runners may be too flimsy. this will allow me to go further up the mountain during winter without requiring boots. Thanks for tips everyone! Have fun out there, hopefully we'll get a little snow eventual...

Thanks Taco, i need to chk those out. need me some beefier traction for sure. Hey Everyday, have you had good luck with those on light trail runners? High altitude running during the "winter" months

Hi all, I've been doing some running lately at higher altitudes. Trails like ski hut and cucamonga peak for instance. These are a good mix of slow running and steep power hiking for me. With the snow coming (eventually, I hope) I was wondering where I would go to try and keep this up. I have microsp...

Re: Silver Moccasin Trail

Ditto! A couple of us have been talking about doing this trail next week in two long days. Of course, this would be difficult if the trail is fouled up with a lot of fallen trees and alot of ice. Short sections here and there of slow going would be okay though. Has anybody been through here lately? ...

I'm hiking to the ski hut in the morning with a friend. Anybody seen the trail lately? I imagine the trail is mostly well trampled by now but wanted to verify we would have no trouble without spikes.
