Re: Campgrounds open?
Thank you sir for that info. Seeing how it is not that far away from home for me, guess your input gives me all the reason I need to go see if that is the case. Thanks again.

Campgrounds open?
Was wondering with the current strike, uhhhh, I mean government shutdown, whether or not Crystal Lake campground is open? Was hoping to get out for a night or two and keep from freezing my butt off while keeping a glass of bourbon from getting warm. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Gold Ridge Highpoint and Baldy Notch
I have actually spent the night with a couple of buddies a little higher up that same ridge, closer to the top of Thunder. One of the guys I was with actually carried an ice chest filled with beer and ice all the way up from the top of the lift. Stupid is as stupid does I always say, but I wasn't th...

Re: Gold Ridge Highpoint and Baldy Notch
Hey Sean, I hope you realize that was mostly posted tongue in cheek. You know, kidding? I probably would have done the same if the beer was cool enough. Nothing worse than warm beer, except maybe a beer thief. LOL

Stealing another persons beer is a pretty F'ed thing to do. Even if it is "Busch". Just saying.

Re: Things Lately
I'm trying to climb Baldy by riding my bike to the trailhead and then going up from there. Failed once, only making it to Baldy Village before I fell apart. Might give it a shot again. Cheers I know a guy that left Santa Monica on his bike after wading into the ocean as a start, rode his bike all t...

Does it say anywhere on any info you have that these are transferable? If so, would you be willing to sell a single space? Thanks, Bill

Re: Henninger Flats water status?
If you Google Henninger Flats you can get a phone number to the ranger station direct. I have called them a few times about water and they are always a pleasant talk. If you guys can't find the number, let me know as I have it somewhere, just would have to look for it.

Re: Blue Ridge Road (3N06)
According to Mountain High's web site they are open for skiing which means the road to Guffy is closed. Instead of hiking in from the 2, try coming up from Wrightwood via Wright Mountain. Not sure of the mileage but would bet it is the shortest way in this time of year.

Re: hunting season
Spent Saturday night(to get away from Halloweeners) up at Guffy. Unfortunately, the campground was overrun with hunters, but was still able to enjoy being there. Was cool but not cold at night, but the wind blew like crazy at times.

Plus if you take the trail into Pear instead of Alta Meadow, you start your cross country journey about 500 feet higher in elevation. Something to think about.Sewellymon wrote: ↑Ya was thinking maybe up the Alta Peak trail to Moose Lake, then out Pear Lake...

Re: Lost in Sequoia
Ya was thinking maybe up the Alta Peak trail to Moose Lake, then out Pear Lake... That was the route we took last September. only in reverse. In to Moose via Pear and out by Alta Meadows. Nice hike if navigation is done properly. The way we did it was easier I think, would rather go from Moose to A...

Re: Lost in Sequoia
I highly recommend it. The views are spectacular and the cross country aspect makes it fun. There is also an exit from Moose that goes down to Alta Meadow and out via Panther Gap. That also puts Alta Peak within ones grasp if they have the time.Sewellymon wrote: ↑good one. i think i want to do this route soon...

Lost in Sequoia
For four glorious days. The good kind of lost, not in the sense of not knowing where you are, but in the sense of seeing no one for almost 3 days, and enjoying the hell out of it. Hiked into Pear Lake by myself on Sunday, expecting to meet up with my hiking friend Warren. Was surprised in not seeing ...

Re: TR: Hawkins, Burnham, and Baden-Powell, June 2015
I have spent the night almost exactly where you did, many, many times. It is probably my favorite spot to spend time under the stars in all of the Angeles National Forest. The hike from Dawson Saddle out to Baden-Powell is quite possibly the best hike in the San Gabriel's. especially if it can be do...

Re: Fourth Of July on top of---------
Nice sunset. Did you take any photos of the fireworks? Sounds like a good place to be on the 4th. Didn't bring a tri-pod or a camera that was good for exposure shots. Watching was the main reason for being up there, but next time will be more prepared. Was a really great night with just a little wi...

Fourth Of July on top of---------
Mt. Baldy. Always wanted to see what the fireworks shows over the Southern California basin would look like from 10,000 feet, and I wasn't disappointed.Had JD cocktails as the sun went down and it wasn't long before the light shows began. Well worth the effort of lugging all that weight to the top. ...

it's not, and FS has no plans to open as far I I can tell (I'll called a few times... I agree but I called ANF headquarters in Arcadia last week and was told it was open.
