Re: Blue Ridge Road (3N06)

Seeing how the road crosses several times over ski runs at Mountain High, it will remain closed at least until the end of the so called "Ski Season", which this year may be next week. LOL

Up above Rock Creek Lake is Little Lakes Valley. Easy hike into Long Lake, with lots of things to do as day trips using Long Lake as a base camp. Numerous peaks to climb, plenty of lakes to fish, and easy day hikes are all around. On the hike in one feels like they are in Switzerland with all the la...

Re: What to do with Empty Coleman Propane Canisters

They are refillable off a regular gas bbq tank. It takes an adapter that costs under $10 and you put the empty tanks in the freezer for an hour before refilling them. Makes the cost of gas for stoves and lanterns a LOT lower. If in doubt, check youtube

Re: Pacifico Mountain Road (3N17)

HJ, were you able to find out anything about being able to drive to Pacifico? I tried finding out info on that a few weeks back and seemed that I could get no OFFICIAL answer about being able to drive to the campground on top. I was told that the CG was at least open to hiking in and spending the ni...

Once we got to the DevilsBackbone trail, we had the difficult choice of turning left and hitting the top of Baldy, or turning right and heading to the Notch for refreshments. You can see which one won out. LOL

Well, it looks like she enjoyed herself as much as you did. As others have said here, it is nice to see people getting outdoors and enjoying themselves. I have been packpacking, hiking, and just camping for over 40 years, much of it in the local mountains, and always think it is great when people so...

Register Ridge Sucks..........

The ever living daylights out of you. Had never been up it, so the other day I call a friend and suggest we head up it Thursday afternoon and spend the night out. Would get a differant perspective of the Baldy Bowl area than the one I am used to off the Hut Trail. Started from the car some time afte...

Re: Anybody been to Henninger Flat?

Spent last Tuesday night up there (12-20-11). Lots of small stuff on the greound but no trees. Talked to the ranger and he believes that 167 posting was not accurate. Mostly the wind blew like hell but the trees stayed upright for the most part. There will be no shortage of firewood for the stoves f...

 Ok, so I will be the stupid one to ask the question,"Did anyone even try contacting the Forest Service"? Seems rather pointless to get on here and bitch about things if an effort was not even made. Just thought I would ask.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Just wondering if there is still enough snow in the bowl to justify bring crampons and axe on a trip this weekend? Would like to go up the bowl rather than follow the trail route. Thanks for any input.

Well back country jumping out of a copter it is not, but what it is, is 20 minutes from home and the best steep skiing in SoCal the 3 or 4 times a winter right after a good dumping. And for $50, what more could you ask for.

I also just called the visitor center in the village and they did say that the lifts will be running this weekend but once up at the Notch, you are pretty much restricted to that area only and hiking is still prohibited.

Baden-Powell May 6, 2009

Went for what was supposed to be a quick hike up B. P., but due to all the snow still up there (solid snow cover started between 7500 and 7800 feet) it took longer than expected. Still had a great day, bright sun, strong winds, and enough time after the hike to enjoy a beer before heading home. All ...

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail

Yup they're finishing up the Swiss Arete. They didn't call it by that name back then. They called it the Northeast Buttress. My father seems to recall it was named by Ruth Mendenhall. As in Mendenhall glacier? I've never asked but I assume that is the case. John and Ruth Mendenhall were pretty acti...

Just tossed the bags on the ground. The hut was closed midweek, and you can't see the stars from inside anyway. No one else there but myself and the friend I hiked up with. Was very nice and relaxing.

Tuesday night at the Hut

:) Hiked up to the Sierra Club Hut Tuesday afternoon and spent the night. It was just about perfect out, a little windy but not tooo cold. More stars out once the sun went down than I had seen in a long time. The snow is going fast, what little is left. All in all, worth the work getting up there to...

Re: Great day on Baldy

We got started around 7 am. The snow on the way up was just right for us, as we were the only ones on the mountain it seemed, that did not bring crampons. By being cardful, they weren't needed, but would have made things easiar, faster , and safer if they had been brought along and used. We took our...

Avocet makes some nice watches with altimeters in them, but at close to $200 , I think I would rather have a good GPS, and I do have 2 of their watches which I used for years before getting my Etrex Legend.

Great day on Baldy

Spent yesterday with an old friend getting our butts to the top of Baldy. It had been a while since being up there with that much snow. Lots of peole were going straight up the bowl. but we sort of followed the summer trail up the West side. Plenty of people boarding and skiing their way off the sum...

Mike, I could be wrong, but in your pics of the bowl with people in them, you keep refering to the "East" side of the Bowl. Wouldn't the side of the Bowl with the summer time trail on it be more the "West" side?
Just a thought.
