Re: Fish Fork canyon June 24 - June 26 2011
The question I always ask at the end is "Would you do it again?" The ACA rating seems 4CVI I would like to test out if going "canyon right" in Taco's watering hole would spit you out instead of making it a keeper. But, that's a whole lotta pain to go through just to test out a h...

Re: Lupine Camp to Cabin Flat 6/16/11
The campground being reclaimed by nature is a good sign of how remote the place is.
Looks like you had a great time!

Re: Man shot to death at Chantry
Today I did the hike from Sierra Madre to Mt. Wilson. At the Observatory, the Police would not let hikers go down the main trail. I thought they found the body at the observatory, but maybe they were searching for the suspect. If you are going hiking in that area tomorrow, expect the police to still...

Count me as strongly interested but yet to have to buy the gear. Weekends are my only time to play.
Any recommendations on crampons?

Re: Villager and Rabbit Peaks
Amazing, I was looking though my hiking book this morning thinking to myself, I need to do this hike! More so, I need to do this hike and scout the Rattlesnake Canyon that is just to the East of the hiking trail. Sounds like a long day even without the inclusion of scouting. Hmmmm, at least now I ha...

Re: Allison Mine
How were the cameras being kept dry? I was shooting with the dSLR which I simply kept in a camera bag inside of my backpack. Only tricky thing was keeping the lens dry from the waterfall mist. Video camera was kept in a more elaborate contraption. I don't know the name or brand of the manufacturer,...

I found the bones about 1/4 mile up the gulch. I thought it may interest you hence the photo.
There were bear scats in the area as well but they were about two to three months old.

Re: Allison Mine
I am happy to say that we had relatively low water levels when we got to Allison Gulch. East Fork is still at about knee deep level. Warmer air temps made being wet a non-issue. Despite the fact that it is winter, the hike up to the mine got pretty hot. The trail can at times be difficult to follow....

Re: Allison Mine
Seriously though, you might want to bring an ascender combo for the first person down. (Do canyoneers ever use the frog system as a backup? Is it possible to climb back up against the force of a waterfall using ascenders?) Canyoneers typically don't carry the frog system but just about everyone has...

Re: Allison Mine
Thank you for everyone's input. I will be doing the canyon with six intermediate level canyoneers. Sounds like 3/2 mm wet suits and neoprene socks are a must. I will also assume that after the storm we will have to build natural anchors at each rap. Ze & Davantalus, thanks for the links. Great r...

Allison Mine
Hello All, I am hoping to do a canyoneering trip to Allison Mine on 1/22/2011. My group would hike in along Allison Gulch and the old mining trail and enter the canyon at the mine. (see map for return path). http://mapper.acme.com/?ll=34.25516,-11 ... Baldy%20CA I know we will have to cross the East...
