Re: Charging for rescues

Texas Parks and Wildlife (Game Wardens) issue citations for criminal offenses for which fines are assessed by the court and TPWD assesses civil restitution. I am not advocating for licenses for outdoor activity that does not directly take natural resources but there seems to be something here that p...

Re: Add Another Body to the List 2/8/2017

There are definitely some guides and companies out there that have no business being in the business. I've seen guides make bad decisions but the one's I've seen learned from their mistakes and luckily no one got hurt. However, I saw some "very forceful" guides working rope teams up Rainie...

It sounds like after 4 dry years and winter "hiking" opportunities on Baldy, this year Baldy is a true mountaineering endeavor.

Re: Water Purification

I too used to use a big, bulky Sweetwater filter. One weekend two years ago, I pulled a day permit for Whitney and Muir and did not want to drink untreated from the lake at Trail Camp so I picked up a Sawyer Squeeze filter at Elevation. I've had one bag fail but replacement bags are reasonably cheap...

Re: Solar Chargers

I use a GoalZero Switch 8 battery and Nomad 7 panel. I charge the battery by a wall charger before I leave town. I recharge my devices at night from the battery and charge the battery during the day from the solar charger. I find that I don't need the charger for weekend trips using the battery and ...

Re: North Fork of Big Pine Creek, Advice Needed

I've been up there a couple times. 1. A good spot to watch sunrise would be the east end of Second Lake. I recall a few large rock features to sit on and enjoy the view. 2. I haven't done the trail between Black and Fourth lakes but my general impression of the area from First to Third Lakes is that...

Re: any downhill hiking resources?

Early in my mountaineering career I found myself trying to really cushion each step on the downhill by leaning back and absorbing the load with my knees and quads. This slowed me down, tired me out and led to some knee problems. I learned to lean forward and let gravity pull you down the mountain. S...

Yes. I jumped a small rattler in the middle of the trail on my descent late in the morning last year around the houses and bench. (I apologize that I do not know the proper name of the area).

Re: Why are these spots so popular/crowded these days?

The upside is winter hiking. Hiking in the ice and snow is the best time to avoid the crowds. People must be afraid of the cold or something. I don't know. I've seen some woefully prepared winter hikers in IHC (think church clothes and a bottle of water). I've also seen some overly prepared (Oly Mo...

Re: cottonwood lakes (sierra) report - fighting AMS

Good point Sean. Although it's good to err on the side of safety, rehydration is critical to preventing AMS. Dehydration and AMS do share some common symptoms. I used to get AMS every time I got above 10k and exerted myself. I lost a ton of weight, try to stay super hydrated, and get a good nights s...

Re: cottonwood lakes (sierra) report - fighting AMS

I have not personally taken Diamox (Acetazolamide is the generic version) but I carry it and have administered it to my wife (at Cottonwood Lakes). It aids in the acclimitization process and reduces the symptoms of AMS. Diamox is not steroidal and will not treat HACE or HAPE. Diamox allowed her to a...

Re: cottonwood lakes (sierra) report - fighting AMS

My family of 4 did the same backpack last Memorial Day weekend with gorgeous weather. My wife had symptoms of AMS (nausea, headache, fatigue) but Diamox, lots of fluids, and some food got her over it. It sounds like you were sliding beyond AMS into something worse and I'm glad you made it back down ...

We were in Icehouse Canyon and saw the helicopter. From a distance, the bowl did not look to be in good shape. Icehouse Canyon was treacherous with a mix of dirt, snow and ice along the trail.

I jumped a 24" rattler on the descent from Icehouse Saddle August 4 about 3/4 mile from the trailhead. He was moving downhill just a little slower than I was.

Snakes, why did it have to be snakes?

Re: Mt. Waterman Trails (from Buckhorn or Three Points)

I was up there last Saturday and did the 6 mile loop. The road was generally clear up to the ski lift. Beyond the ski lift snow was 6-12 inches deep and very soft and slushy. The trail was a mix of ice and snow but was easy to follow. There appeared to have been plenty of traffic. We took our time a...

$32.96. Planning to move to the REI Visa as soon as I can use those damn Cabelas points.

Picked up a 9.8mm x 70m Mammut Climax rope for about $75 after clearance price and 20% off and dividend.
