Re: Pacific Crest Trail (Cajon - Little Jimmy - Soledad)
Was on Islip this morning and the 2 is open from La Canada to Wrightwood.
The trail is a good mix of dirt, snow, and refrozen melt. The summit is clear of snow.
If anyone finds my SPOT device, please let me know.

Re: End of the Adventure Pass?
Don't forget that the road you use to access a trailhead or other recreation area is an improvement that requires maintenance. Regarding diversion of funds by Congress, it's nothing new. The new FAA reauthorization bill increase sthe security fee but more than half of the funds that will be raised w...

I'm up to 66 this year. I'm in my taper now for the Surf City Marathon but I primarily run to stay in shape for mountaineering.

I was actually thinking about Cucamonga on Saturday.

Re: 2012 Basic Winter Mountaineering Clinic
Hey folks, Does anyone know of anywhere in the San Diego or Los Angeles area that rents crampons and boots? Hopefully, I will also be able to rent an Ice Axe and Helmet as well? I have yet to find a substantial gear rental list anywhere :/ I believe REI Huntington Beach does. Go to REI.com and you ...

Re: Winter Boots
Tons of information on boots is available at Summitpost. Try everything on. La Sportiva is a narrower boot. Scarpa is a wider boot. Lowa is somewhere in between. I've not worn Salewa but they are well respected in Europe. A lot of folks wear the Lowa Mountain Expert GTX. This is a great boot but was...

Re: best REI store in LA for hiking boots ?
NOT HUNTINGTON BEACH! I feel like the boot fitter when I'm in that store. That siad, I've bought my wife's Keen boots and my daughter's Vasque boots there. I bought my Lowa Silberhorns at A16 on Pico in West LA and was very happy with the fitting and service. After I get a few more miles on them I'l...

Re: Bighorn, Ontario, and Sugarloaf (6/12)
I guess many folks got a late start. I was on Bighorn and Ontario 6/12 as well and had Bighorn to myself. I had Ontario to myself for a few minutes before a trail runner joined me. Above ICS I only saw 5 or 10 folks and most were going up while I was on my descent. I started around 0630 and finished...

I was thinking about doing the same thing but am begging out of Saturday because the Amgen Tour of California is riding up Baldy Rd and it's going to be a zoo with what sounds like huge access problems into Icehouse Canyon unless you get out there Friday evening.
I may go Sunday but don't know yet.

Re: Golden Trout Wilderness/Cottonwood lakes
Bear canisters are required at Cottonwood Lakes and cost around $5 to rent at the multi agency center in Lone Pine. The hike in to the lakes is relatively easy, save for the altitude. East side road conditions are being tracked at http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB3/eastsi ... 58070.html . Snow conditi...

Re: Layering in a sleeping bag?
If you're cold in your sleeping bag, add layers. The goal is to provide adequate insulation to sl;eep comfortably. For example, in a 35 F rated bag in mid-teens temperatures, I'll wear long underwear, wool socks, and a wool cap. However, I usually try not to wear all my clothes so that when I leave ...

+1 for the synthetic Thermawrap jacket. Very versatile piece. I use mine in a layering system when it's frigid or as a belay jacket when it's chilly.

Sorry for the delayed response. Once you get into the wider area of the canyon there's snowshoeable (is that a word?) terrain. The trail was pretty packed down on my way out Sunday afternoon but there was plenty of opportunity down in the canyon and on the slopes. With the warm temperatures be on th...

It's my understanding that any access into the Whitney Zone requires a permit. Other areas around the Whitney Zone are quota areas and the number of folks allowed on the trail is limited thus permits are also required.
