Backpacking/Biking in the San Gabriels

Ok so this wasn't your run of the mill back packing trip but I wanted to pick something fun and short to break up the monotony. Wednesday after work my wife and I tossed our packs into the car and drove up to Dawson Saddle and hiked to the top of Mt. Lewis. There is a great camping area on the easte...

Cougarmagic - I like your new photo! Laura Croft?

It's a short hike 5.5 miles RT and 1600 feet of elevation gain... Not to bad... or you could keep going and bag Little San Gorgonio.... 8)

Thanks! I'll make sure to let the photographers know you liked them.

It's kind of crazy but Fall is already upon us, there were quite a few trees with yellowing and falling leaves... What a short summer!

Camp Creek 8-20-11

Took my wife and two sisters up to Forest Falls over the long weekend. Went in search of uncrowded waterfalls. Well we found one, still lots of cold water flowing in the side canyons. Took a few falls on loose rock but no one got seriously hurt (just a few scrapes and bruises). On a side note a few ...

The Past Few Weeks

So it's been a great summer, had a trip planned to Bridgeport to do Incredible Hulk but it got cancelled the day before due to weather (turns out it was a good call the 395 & Tioga Pass were closed due to mud slides and floods, it was the same weekend that the lady got killed on Half Dome and I ...

Re: North Backbone - Pine, Dawson, Baldy 8/7/2011

I drove up to the trailhead a few weeks back in my Honda FIT stopped half a dozen times to clear some bigger rocks. I didn't think it was to bad (used to drive my car deep into Holcomb Valley Big Bear so compared to that this road might as well be paved). How long did it take you to get to Baldy and...

Botany ID Guide

So a few months ago Cougarmagic posted an excerpt from Willard Clute's books. It inspired me to create a very rough guide. I normally hike with my iPhone (because of the GPS app and camera) so now I can have a botany guide book of sorts too. Here is a link to the PDF where you can download it https:...

@davantalus - That isn't a bad idea. I brought the rope because I was planning on belaying my sister so she could look off the edge of Big Falls but by the time we got there we were to tired and dehydrated.

Piute Pass & Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest 7/8-7/10

I got off early from work on Friday, grabbed my pre-packed bags gave the pets some extra food and water and bailed for the High Sierra. In Pearsonville hit some awesome thunderstorms that were DUMPING! The scent of wet sage brush was thick in the air. It was wonderful. Got into Bishop at 6pm and dro...

Baden-Powell Night Hike 7-5

On Tuesday last week, bailed from work as soon as I could and drove up the 2. I got to the Vincent Flats in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Took 1.5 hours up and 1 hour down. The last 30 minutes on the way down was fully dark, time to bust out the headlamp! Got a bit spooked by an unknown creature in the bus...

Oh ok, I remember that plane wreckage. I thought maybe you had made it past Shields Peak heading towards San Bernardino where the other plane crash happened. Back in the late 90's an US Airforce plane crashed on the south facing flank of San Bernardino Mtn. There were a bunch of Airforce Search and ...

Also I could not remember the name of the rappel when I wrote the TR. (Dulfersitz rappel) Thanks for posting that!

Hike in Forest Falls 7-2

Went for a hike in Forest Falls, my old stomping grounds on Saturday with my sister. It is a hike I discovered when I was a wee las (12 or so) and it is mostly cross country. You start going up a rugged gully Lots of big trees on the way and stellar views Galena Peak through the trees On our way up ...

Sat. 6-25 E. Twin Peak via Mt. Waterman and 3 Points

I'm sitting on my couch watching Higher Ground and thinking about the perfect day I had last Saturday climbing Mt. Waterman and East Twin Peak. I started out cross country straight up to what we will call the Waterman Ridge from Hwy 2. It was a slog (the GPS said 1,200 foot elevation gain in 800 yar...

I link from Picassa and there is an option when embedding the link to SGMDF (see photo below).

As for the caves I climbed up there and they are little more than divots in the hillside, if they were mines they have since been filled in. Kind of cool looking from below though.

Re: 6.24.11 - waterman via waterman trail/waterman road

There is a fun loop (3 miles round trip) that crosses the top of Mt Hillyer with great views of Mt Pacifico. The trail wanders through a large boulder field that horse thieves used to use as a hide out after stealing horses down in the desert to the north. If you've never been it is worth a look and...
