I normally just use my Bandit 5000 Forestry Mower. Its much more powerful than the fiskars, and you don't get your hands dirty.

Re: What do you think of smartphone topo maps?
I use Backcountry navigator on android . I have stopped using my garmin. I have learned to manage the battery and make it last all day. ( in airplane mode, and not recording a track) You can use the usgs, usfs, google sat images, caltopo maps etc. It was free to try and 9.99 to buy. Only app i ever ...

Re: Mountain Lion Tooth??
Unlikely a bear as this was near Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet. I guess a bear could get there, but very unlikely. Could be from a bald eagle, they do frequent the lakes in So Cal during the winter. The feathers i saw looked like a red tail hawk or similar.

Mountain Lion Tooth??
I found what I think is a lion tooth. It looks somewhat fresh, still some tissue near the top, but the actual tooth is kinda flakey on the surface. It appears more solid near the top, and under the flakey part. Maybe its just build up over the actual tooth? Anyone know if this is a cougar tooth? I c...

Re: My First GPS Hike
Caltopo is the cause of the straight lines on the track, not the gps data. Open the track in mapsource or basecamp, that will show you each and every point that your gps recorded. Caltopo has a limit of 2000 points per "shape" So if its a 5000 point track it will adjust the points to 2000....

Re: Pacifico Mountain Road (3N17)
I have recently (in the past month) hiked both roads. I called the ranger station and they said they are both open to hiking but not driving. The roads are in excellent shape and the signage at junctions has been replaced. There were fresh tire tracks on both roads, so someone is driving them.

Fox Mountain, the Long Way
I haven't wrote a trip report on here in a long time so I figured since I recently have been hiking in the San Gabriels, I should post. It seems the road to Mt. Gleason may never open again, not sure what the USFS is waiting for, but I was tired of waiting. cab and I both needed Fox, Condor, Iron# 2...

Re: Ontario Peak North Face - Sheep Canyon West Ridge Rock Route
I went down this canyon last month with some canyoneering types that knew what they were doing. Here are the pics. I wouldn't try climbing the headwall, the rock is not great, some large blocks that look ready to go. Just below, and just above the headwall are a few short sections with some fun clas...

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found
It was a failure of common sense. I don't think its common sense. It may seem like common sense to someone that has hiked a lot, but if its your first time out, something as simple as following an easy trail can be tricky. Those mountains are a very tough place once you get off the trail. My guess ...

I believe the area is still technically closed. However, we were up there in October......... I can't believe you would do such a thing. Don't you know traveling in the burn areas can transfer seeds from your shoes to the area and introduce invasive species? https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/l...

Good job on the day hike of Mt. McKinley. I day hiked Mt. Ararat a few weeks ago, I nearly lost a leg due to the conditions. (climbing a barbed wire fence)
