Re: 20090418 Baldy DBB
Kathy, I was went up the ski hut today and came down DBB. The ski hut trail is snow free until the shady slope where the trail switchbacks up to the ridge. I started real early, so it was a bit slick when I went up. (used crampons) There is good boot track through that area. Once you get to the ridg...

Tom Harrison Angeles Front Country Trail Map on iPhone
Found this today on the Tom Harrison Map page. http://www.earthrover.org/Earthrover_So ... ilMap.html You can get the Angeles Front Country Trail Map on an iPhone. This looks awesome. Anyone ever use an iPhone to navigate? If a wide variety of his maps became available on iPhone, I would definitely ...

Re: Costa Mesa A16 Closed
The A16 in Costa Mesa was always a ghost town every time I have been in there. Half of that store was Patagonia, which is way over priced. There was some good, helpful people at the Oceanside store when I was in there.

I am planning on leaving the SF trail head at 630 or so this Saturday morning. then head for that saddle, unless the conditions suck, then find somewhere lower.

Re: What made these tracks?
I'm actually really surprised at the apparent lack of bobcats - I have only ever gotten one trailcam picture of one, and almost never see tracks. There's more mountain lion sign around than bobcat, that's for sure. Seems like it should be the other way around. I have seen 3 bobcats in the Santa Ana...

Nice TR. You guy are crazy!!! Snowshoes definitely would have saved you some suffering. That cabin is at Horse Meadows not South Fork. How was it driving Jenks lake road out??? I imagine it wasn't plowed???

Mt. Wilson Trail 2-8-09
Did the Mt. Wilson Trail today. This time was much more enjoyable than the last time I hiked here. (100 degrees and swarms of gnats & mosquitoes) It was drizzly for the first mile or so, then just clouds. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_yGbBedEcKn0/SY-KZFRnY0I/AAAAAAAAD2Q/ZhtVYyf4S1Y/s800/IMG_5916.JPG Did...

Re: Winter Boots
I ended up getting the Lowa Cristallo X Pro on clearance at REI. I don't think they have them anymore though. I tried on about 6 different pairs, and these were the best fit and seemed to be the most durable. So far no complaints. Fit true to size.

406- The snow below 8000' was soft, but above that it was hard on the way up and down. The last 200 vertical feet or so there was a lot of bare spots from the wind, but in the trees the coverage was excellent. Ellen- Once I left the trail crampons were necessary. There was a deep boot track on the t...

Re: What made these tracks?
And the proportions are messed up from the melting? The 2 with the ski poles were at 10,000' just north of San Gorgornio. They seemed fresh but the wind was blowing pretty good. Do cats go up that high in winter? The other one was with in 1 mile of the South Fork Trail head, so at about 7200'. I th...

the south fork trail in the san gorgornio wilderness is a good one. also lots of good trails if you take the PS tram up to long valley, but be prepared to fork over 22 bucks each for a tram ride

Attempted baldy yesterday. There was a couple ahead of me that I think made it to the top. The route went up the easterly portion of the bowl. I turned around a little past 9k'. Even following their tracks I was still post holing constantly. When I came down, someone had broke trail toward the regul...

I had the same experience today above the skihut. made it o 9000' and turned around due to constant postholing (with snow shoes)TacoDelRio wrote:with deep, cold, dry powder snow up to my crotch.
The snow play crowd was insane. People everywhere, line of cars backed up from below the village all the way up.
