Re: Avalanches in San Gorgonio?
Your best bet is to stay on the same ridge I did. The wind usually strips most of the snow off of it. I wouldn't dig a test pit unless you have been trained in it. It may give you a false sense of security. I would just avoid the chutes. Did you see this thread on the San G Forum: http://members.boa...

Re: How much snow is on Gorgonio?
Awesome pictures! This was on the SGWA board last week: The old orange ski route markers were about 5 feet above the snow surface. They are 12 feet above the ground, so the snow is about 7 feet deep there. I tried to measure the snow depth in the middle of Little Draw (south of Mt. Jepson) at 10,000...

Re: San Gorgonio
Would you say snow shoes are necessary now to get as high as your camp?. Last weekend you could easily get to south fork meadows w/o snowshoes. After SF meadows snowshoes were a must. (the way we went at least; see map in pictures) The areas exposed to the wind were hard packed, while the areas whe...

San Gorgonio
Despite the doom and gloom forecast by Johnny Mountain and the mega Doppler HD 7000, 4 of us backpacked up the south fork. Its was overcast Saturday AM but cleared up for a great weekend. We camped at about 9400' in a nice sheltered spot. Ron and I climbed up the NW ridge and reached summit about 9:...

Thats what I thought. Must be a hibernationly challenged bear. The track looked so fresh, and was so easy to follow, I was tempted to follow it and see if I could find the bear. I was to tired by that point though.cougarmagic wrote:Looks like a bear cubbie track, yes!

simonov- No flotation necessary. I did post hole every once in a while, but not bad. I used crampons and axe above 9500'. Most people just going to dry lake were using snowshoes. Enfuego- 10:45 car to car. About 3 to Dry Lake then 2:45 from dry lake to the summit. I really slowed down after dry lake...

San Gorgonio via South Fork 12-19-09
Started out solo from the South Fork trail head at 5:15am and hit Poop Out hill just after sunrise. Snow started at the trail head and was well packed down until South Fork Meadows. I made my way up the drainage to Dry Lake then up the draw to the north face chutes. http://lh6.ggpht.com/_yGbBedEcKn0...

I am sure you will find someone on here to tag along with, but if not, you wont be alone on a Saturday morning on Baldy. Probably the most used trail/ route in Southern California. Have fun!

Re: Advice regarding Baden Powell
Its hard to say if you are biting of more than you can chew. Its really a personal decision based on conditions and your experiences. Its not the greatest snowshoe route. If you are looking for a good snowshoe route try the south fork in the San Gorgonio Wilderness or take the tram at San Jacinto St...

Check out Granite, Whale, Sombreo or Indianhead Peaks in Anza Borrego. They are all on Summitpost. Not really San Diego, but well worth the drive. They aren't technical or really long, but you could do 2 in one day if you want miles.

Yes. I never drink water from the stream below the crapper. Always fill up at the steam just past the hut. It comes out of the ground 50 feet or so up stream.asbufra wrote:Isn't there an outhouse about 250 feet "uphill" from that spring?
