Re: Furnace Slot Canyon

Gotta ask - How consolidated is the material in the walls of those slots? Granted the pictures don't show how well the rock/sand has been cemeted together over time, but from the pictures it looks really loose to the point of possilby falling apart at any moment. That overhang in one of your pics wo...

Re: Happy Black Friday

I braved the inter-web today. Bought me a new acoustic-electric baritone ukulele for about 60% off! :D I've been on the lookout for a good deal on one for a while. Not exactly a piece of outdoor gear, although the Uke is small enough to lash to a backpack. But I'm not gonna carry an amp and a crazy-...

Re: EAST Horsethief Trail (Santa Ana Mtns)

Thanks for the video. I tried tracing it on Google Earth, too, and it went down that 'feral' fire road shown in the Youtube video. I remember it being a 4 mile long trail (the MTBr's route was probably longer) that intersected the fire road not too far from the Main Divide Road intersection after a ...

EAST Horsethief Trail (Santa Ana Mtns)

Does anyone who has frequented the trails along the Main Divide Road know if this still exists at the lower portion down near Lake Elsinore?. (I'm not talking about the popular WEST Horsethief trail which comes out of Trabuco Canyon). It's mentioned in the old Ken Croker guidebook, but not in Jerry ...

Looks good! Yeah the whole opening screen with all the sub-forums shows on my monitor; don't know squat about the monitor's sizing stuff, so can't comment on that.

Now to fill up the new subforum. Where to go this weekend ??? :D

How aobut starting it off with a picture from the Santa Ana Mountains. Looking northward from Sitton Peak (3300 ft) towards Santiago Peak, the highest peak in the range. Lets see if I can get a few pictures from a Jan 2010 hike of Sitton Peak to show up. First picture is looking northeast at the San Gorgonio Wilderness are of the San Berdoo Mtns from Sitton Peak, second should be looking north, with the (higher) summit of Santiago Peak in the center, and the lower L...

Re: Orange County Hiking/Sections of this Forum

A new sub-forum on here would be a good idea, but call it the 'Santa Ana Mtns/CNF' or something similar - this is probably a better description of the area: 1. The CNF is a patchwork of low elevation mountains extending down through San Diego. 2. The Santa Ana Mtns, the north area of the CNF, is not...

Re: Cleveland National Forest?

Jerry Schad's book is probably the only one you'll find that covers the northern area of the Cleveland Natl Forest/Santa Ana Mtns, and its good. I've also got a copy of Ken Croker's book (1985 version, just after the San Mateo Wilderness was created). Its small enough to fit in the back pocket of yo...

Thanks Richard et al.....good info. Looks like, depending on recent weather conditions, the road should be fine for a 4wd truck. Probably no worse than getting to Blue Ridge or Guffy. Re: Anyone done Telescope Pk (death valley area)?

I was planning to go this weekend until the storm and park closure happened. That area got 'touched' by the late September storm, and a better 'hit' by this past week's storm. Couple that with the National Park closure, and the odds of getting up to the trailhead are pretty slim right now (I'd bet i...

Neutrogina here, too. The only reason I choose it over the other brands is it doesn't leave the lingering 'day-at-the-beach' sunscreen smell on me and my gear. You can also try hiking in the twilight-to-dawn hours; no sunscreen needed! Its actually a pretty cool (pun intended) time to hike, especial...

Definately looks like a tagged vulture. But is that really a tracking tag, or a new form of Adventure Pass for birds - no telling what schemes the local forest service administrators are concocting to bring in more $$$.

There's tagged condors cruising around that pass through LA County. A couple years ago they were hanging around the top of Kagel Canyon, (above Sylmar) where the hang gliders used to fly. They are seen around Castaic and Lancaster too, The tagged condors will have a short antenna coming out of the ...

Re: Tarantula and Hawk

Definately a vulture. Do you have any pictures of the 'vultures' with wing tags that you saw around Crystal Cove? That's kind of unusual to tag a common bird like a vulture, so I'd think its something else. California condors are tagged when released back into the wild, but the closest release areas...

And don't forget a lot of folks only do the "#1"/highest/most grueling routes. Mt. Baldy is the highest in the SG Mtns, so its going to get significant traffic.

Nice video of the bobcat. I spend a lot of time in the Santa Ana Mountains, and bobcats seem to be quite common there. Occasionaly I'll get a quick glance of one (never happens in the San Gabriel, San Berdoo, or San Jacinto Mtns), but I also see a lot of their footprints all over the range.
