This is true. Gotta keep them in your armpits or crotch to warm them up. Nearly detroyed my teeth. At least the Clif bars don't have a "skin" to them, so they break down into smaller teeth-shattering bits.

Re: The most challenging hike in the San Gabriels?
You could always try this North Ridge route: http://www.summitpost.org/route/297109/north-ridge.html I think Baden Powell from the South would be a worth opponent. I may try Baden Powell from Mine Gulch, straight up one of the chutes. Lotsa gain in a short distance. Looks nuts. That might qualify, ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
Hopefully Jim answered the question. I know very little about the route. I was told by a buddy that it used to be the most-travelled way up, back in the late 1800's and early 1900's. I've taken a bunch of pictures from GRR (Glendora Ridge Road) looking at the ridge, and you can almost see a trail in...

Re: The most challenging hike in the San Gabriels?
Probably not without stringing together too many peaks.
Augie has a list going: http://www.summitpost.org/list/315860/T ... tains.html
I haven't tried most, so I can't say.

Travis, did you get a look of that main ridge that runs down what's basically the north face of Jepson? (east side of Jepson Bowl)
Does it look crappy?
Thanks!

Hey Travis, If it wasn't for the fact that I used your trip report as my guide, I'd think we were on different hikes! I don't have anything against hunters either; my hiking partner is an avid hunter. But you might be right. Some of the trash was in piles, suggesting someone spent some time in one ...

That was the best we've ever eaten in the mountains! One of my more realistic goals for stupid things to do on Baldy is to make sushi up there. Focusing on unagi (favorite, sea eel) and hand-rolls. Gonna be tricky, gotta make the rice before I leave, package it, and reheat on the summit or some junk...

... the San Gabriels are a popular spot for shooters to set up a safe area and practice target shooting. It's legal... Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?
I did mention this, and gave it a shot one morning. Ended up with nothing more than an 8 mile walk in Cow Canyon. The entrance from Heaton Flats is closed, because of the ranch. YOu would probably have to enter from the RV camp at Cow Canyon Saddle, but I believe the private property still straddles...

Re: Hunters
All is well on this front. If it came across as such, I apologise, as I will usually say something up front about shooters as they are often poorly represented when it comes to hiking and mountaineering. I always see shooters (good ones) getting the shaft in lots of situations, so I like to represen...

As a sorta former hunter (don't really anymore, unfortunately), I can saw we aren't always the stereotype. I'm more of a shooter though. basic rules everyone should follow.
It's the vatos and wannabe gangsters you hafta watch out for, mostly at trailheads or any turnoff on the roads.

Good TR, HE!
I really do suggest that anyone cooking ramen should add some sake. A large amount for those of us who are immune to it (very not an advantage).
Sho Chiku Bai Ginjo Sake (I don't like it, so it works great in cooking).
Great pics bro.

Re: Favorite Running Trails
I rarely run on trails (I'm slow), but I really enjoyed running down the road that goes from West Fork SG to Cogswell Dam. Really pretty area. I think 14 miles RT.
I run at home on the streets, usually getting 10-15 miles. I like the trails more, as I always come away with better feeling joints.

6 mile walk or bike (walk for me) past mile marker 32.12 at VOTM before Coldbrook, up to Crystal Lake. Fun ride down. I wish it was opened to the first gate just past CL.

Re: San Jacinto Alpine Routes (Aside from Snow Creek)
I'm planning on Snow Creek whenever conditions are good, coming up, probably April from what folks have been saying. Whenever the snow is hard and there's less of a chance of postholing. I scoured the net and read all them there trip reports... which just showed me more things to look at when I last...

There is most excellent skiing to be had... in condition of course. Many people also get complacent about avalanche danger too, considering the proximity to one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world. But for the less foolish folks, awesome times to be had. Sounds like you are going to have...

San Jacinto Alpine Routes (Aside from Snow Creek)
Whenever I go past San Jacinto, I always wonder how beautiful and badass the various ridges coming off the north face look. I'm thinking of doing Snow Creek next spring, or whenever conditions are optimal for snow/ice, and it got me thinking about the tons of other possibilities on the mountain. Som...
