Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Should be good for crampons in +/- a week, on Ontario.

Re: winter hiking lessons learned

As Augie said, a book can be a lifesaver, especially if you're alone. -Snow stakes are nice. SMC has them for cheap (1.50 EA), carried by REI. -Make sure your axe has a good, wide adze. Black Diamond Ravens are perfect. This can chop bivy spots, or more likely here, chop frozen turf so you don't put...

Re: Trip Report: San Gorgonio Area, 20071209-10

Thanks Rob! My battery is fine, but my lens doesn't extend enough in the cold. It probably just has sand in it from the desert, just hafta clean it and hope for the best. Only really does this when it's freezing or colder out. The Alkaline batteries die sooner. BTW, date was actually 08-09, otherwis...

Re: Possible Winter Climbing Routes

Figure I'd throw this out there, but since we just got our first real snow, the binge begins. Anyone up for routes around Telegraph Peak, and possibly up Cucamonga Peak's Smith Ridge?

Amongst a handful of other things.

It's on.

I figured since it's pretty historical, I'd make a duplicate page, figure out I mispelled something, then search it, find the real page, and say "Aw f*&34" and delete the page. If anyone here goes there more often, and ya wanna adopt it, lemme know. My SAR friends go there for va...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I hope to have some by sometime this winter.

From my only time going up Ontario, it really felt like a good place for a snowshoe ascent. It's got great views, and is all relatively easy terrain.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Ontario early-on will probably be a good place for snowshoes. I think they got rid of the dead trees blocking the trail, making it a bit friendlier.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

From my back porch, looking at the south side of Baldy, there appears to be very very little snow. I'd say crampons might be an option, though I really doubt it. Dawson Peak also seems to have some, anything north facing etc etc. Not likely you'll need snowshoes for awhile. We're supposed to get som...

Re: Old Mount Emma, Mount Emma, Cole Point and Mount Gleason

It's not too bad a range, form the drive past at least. Went there a couple times as a kid.

I go to Stockton area in winter and spring, and haven't had any issues. Closer to Chalk Peak is where one would be in possible theoretical danger from fliers.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Michael Mojarro, I really hope you're right!!!! I just got back from a run a lil' while ago, and it started raining around 6pm... gets my hopes up. If this works, I'm looking towards a trip up to the Baldy area. Figure I'd go (arrive, rather) around 4pm and hike up near Icehouse, going up Telegraph ...

Re: Travis' videos: how did he do them?

I had thought of using a helmet-mounted camera, one of the smaller tubular digital ones that links to a real camera in a pouch somewhere. I've since ditched that idea, so I'm interested as well. All my stuff is shakey.

From your video, your system sure looks stable.

Dayum, good post Doug. Wish I could add something. 8)

I really like my Snow Peak Titanium small whatsitcalled stove. Cooked real well at the highest it's been, 10,064 on Baldy. That's about all I can say due to my limited knowledge on cooking using stuff other than hexamine and trioxane, etc.
