Re: Chaparral is starting to bloom....

Anyone been down there (Idlehour) recently? Last time I was through, there was quite a bit of Poison Oak in the camp area which made me think that I wouldn't want to set up there even though, for the front range, it's really a nice secluded spot. The hike I did that time was kind of a cool loop. I ...

Re: Favorite Running Trails

Ten years ago, I could easily run from the Cobb Estate to Echo and up Castle Canyon to Inspiration Point without one stop. No more. Now, I need a few walking breaks on the Castle Canyon trail. I couldn't imagine even running all the way to Echo Mnt. Keeping up a fast hiking pace is tough enough, i ...

Chaparral is starting to bloom....

It is looking like this spring is going to be amazing for our local flora. The chaparral is already starting to bloom and everything is so green and fragrant. I would think that most of March will be ideal to hike the San Gabriel Mnts and see all sorts of plants in full bloom. One of my favorites hi...

Re: Favorite Running Trails

The loop I did yesterday would seem like a good trail run. Start at the end of Lake Ave. up Sam Merrill Trail to Echo Mnt. Continue up to Inspiration Point and up the east trail to Mount Lowe, run down Mnt. Lowe (west trail) onto the fireroad (old railway bed) and continue down to the Cape of good h...

Re: Echo Mnt, Inspiration Peak, Muir Peak and Mnt. Lowe Loop

I was going with the peak locations as per the summitpost mountain pages: http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock ... -peak.html http://www.summitpost.org/mountain/rock ... -Peak.html which describes the peak right next to Inspiration Point as Inspiration Peak and the peak to the southeast at the en...

Echo Mnt, Inspiration Peak, Muir Peak and Mnt. Lowe Loop

On Sunday 3-2-2008 I decided to get out for a quick hike, as I told my family I would be home by 11 am to go to the beach. I got to the end of Lake Ave. trailhead by 6 am and was the first one on the Sam Merrill trail. I made it to Echo Mountain in 45 minutes, another 45 minutes to Inspiration Point...

Re: Just say no to cranky Sierra Clubbers?

I have seen a number of stickers with anti-sierra club sayings such as this. It seems someone has a major grudge against Sierra Club, maybe the same person who is destroying the summit registers. Many of the stickers had spelling and grammar errors. I tried to attach a file with a picture of another...

Re: Lost & Found

I lost my sanity some time ago. I have been searching for it for several years, figuring it made it to the top of a mountain in California. To date my search has not found my sanity, however the search itself seems to help me find bits and pieces of stuff that helps fill the void where my sanity was...

Re: 20080217 Big Iron with intent to go up Baldy

Nice Photos Taco! One really caught my eye and I marked it up with a cool looking route: Anyone ever done it? Looks like a fun up and would be an amazing ski descent, I think the afternoon sun might soften it up nicely. Three issues I can see: 1. Access. Can you drive up Coldwater Canyon to Widman ...

Re: Josephine Peak via West Ridge

Yes, I forgot about needing a shuttle. If we don't get any other participants then I guess we will both need to drive. Meet at Red Box for 7 am, we will drop a car and drive down to our starting point. Tom is out of town and Ryan is heading out to New Jack City.

If BHR is gonna be like Iron's South Ridge, I think I'll just stab myself in the face with a pencil repeatedly for 12 hours instead.

Josephine Peak via West Ridge

I am taking it easy this Sunday and doing something local. I am thinking about hiking Josephine Peak via the west ridge. Sort of exploratory, but I have read a trip report about this been done before and goes pretty easy. Maybe include Strawberry Peak in the hike and set up a car shuttle. Anyone int...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

well, that is good to know that there is no need to fear the ODWAG. I am also interested in checking out the mine. Worth billions?? The shortcut looks like it may be more trouble than it is worth, the brush itself looked bad enough to reconsider. After my epic Iron via southwest ridge I have decided...

You use the image button only if you have the web address of a downloaded pic.

i.e.

if the photo is not already online somewhere, you need to the "Attach File" link below and upload the image.

Hope this helps,

awsome trip report! For future reference, there is a crapload of little pouches of emergency water stashed at the helicopter landing pad near the Oak tree. The water is expired but tastes fine to me. THis water has saved me a number of times.

Well, we didn't manage to include Rosa Point in this hike, it would have been just too much. But we did have a great hike and completed Rabbit and Villager peak in good time.

Re: Saturday-Sunday Feb 16-17th

Saturday: Big day on Baden Powell. I know it's short notice, but just found out I had the day off last night, as my buddy is taking my shift. Ascending BP (9499) form down low, starting elevation is around 4500, so about 5000ft total gain, on a "new route". Helmet, axe, crampons, good boo...

Re: New Winter Route up Baldy??

Around 1220 meters of climbing. I'm measuring that from lower-snow levels in slightly-steeper parts. Won't know the figure till the climbing begins. 1220m does not reflect elevation gain for the day. Should be a car shuttle, Manker Flats to Cow Canyon Saddle. Hike in, go up that canyon (big if... n...

Re: New Winter Route up Baldy??

I am not sure, but I think it is more like this one:

http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... &layer=DRG

It is south of San Antonio Ridge but north of Bighorn Ridge. Right between 2 major ridges.

New Winter Route up Baldy??

I had some great views of Mount Baldy (might have actually been West Baldy) from Iron Mnt. last Sunday. I couldn't help but notice this nice couloir (I think this is what it is) from the west. Pretty impressive. Taco, what do you think? Could you climb it? https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/gall...

Re: Simonov and He219's Mount Baldy Ascent, 20080209

He219 contacted me at about 4:00pm on Friday night and asked if I was interested in heading up to Mount Baldy at 3:00am the next morning (we live a couple miles away from each other). I am an early riser anyway, so I said okay, all I had to do was rent some crampons at REI. We were on the trail by ...
