Re: i would like to learn to hike in winter conditions
I am hoping that we can arrange a practice outing somewhere near Baldy this winter when we get some snow, in order to practice self arrest and use of crampons and ice axe. Somewhere with a nice, gentle runout. I want more practice myself.

Re: Lytle Creek - Trail to Buck Point?
It looks like it would be an interesting hike. I also want to hike Cucamonga from the south via Deer Canyon, which is in the same area. Here is the Topo map. There is also a route on Summitpost.

Re: bad things happen in nice places
I can't believe this death, I hiked to Sunset a month ago, it is only a couple miles to the summit via the firebreak. Must have been "really good" buddies to not help him down the mountain or at least go back up to get him... "3/6/00. Rosindo Segura of Montclair died probably from exp...

Re: Mt Baldy Pine and Dawson on Oct 13
I hiked Pine and Dawson from Baldy Village and it was over 9000 ft gain, so I suspect the 6000' is a little short (unless they are referring to a oneway hike, ending in Wrightwood). There is a lot of elevation gain going down from Baldy and Back up. Here is my trip report: http://www.summitpost.org/...

Don't worry, I won't be taking any action, regardless of IP addresses, unless warranted. I now understand that the fact some some users have the same IP doesn't mean anything.Janice wrote:Please don't lump us all into the same group.

Can different members have the same IP address? I put Christina under moderation due to her confrontational tendencies, but then I see a new member join this morning with the same IP address, hmm, in fact, there are 3 members with the same IP address, Why can't we all just get along and keep this fo...

Re: Use trail to Mt. Yale question
I have hike past Yale and checked it out on Topozone. http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=34. ... ize=m&s=24 If the ridge from the south is too steep/bushy, it might be better to try from the North. It is not as steep and closer, but you have to hike further along the toll road. Next time I am u...

Re: Good hiking routes up Mount Pacifico and Mount Gleason??
If you left a car on Tujunga Canyon road at mile marker 4.50 drove up near Mount Gleason and hiked down, tagging Gleason, Iron, Condor and Fox on the way, it wouldn't be that hard. I would think reasonable elevation gain and less mileage than the loop. If you did it in the reverse order (starting in...

Re: Cloudburst Canyon
Supercloud.... sounds even better! Helmet overkill? No, definetly not. I forgot to include this and just added it to my original post. Helmet is needed. And I am leaning towards Supercloud also. Augie has the experience and the 60 M canyoneering rope, so I figure to leave the final decisi...

Re: Cloudburst Canyon
Great addition to the categories! I'm ready to go Travis. Since our last trip, I bought a 60m 9.2mm canyoneering rope as well as a rope bag so we don't waste time untwisting the rope. The rappels will be smoother with this thicker rope than the last time when we used two 30m x 8mm ropes tied togeth...

Re: Cloudburst Canyon
If this is the canyon you pointed out on the way up SR2 in the morning, then hell yeah. Looks badass. Beautiful area. What kinda junk do I need to bring? Yes, this is that canyon I pointed out, but the full extent of the badassness is actually Supercloud Canyon and not Cloudburst Canyon. As for wha...

Re: Sleeping bags...
I have only used the liner twice and I did not have any problems. It seemed to stay in place fine, and I move a lot while I sleep. This is the one I have, http://www.rei.com/product/705534 . But, it does cost $50 so that is a big factor. And I am not sure how the weight to warmth ratio is, probably ...

You may want to try checking out used bags. I have had great sucess with www.craigslist.org I did a quick serach and it looks like there are some "used just once" deals. And since they are local, you can check it out before you buy it. Not like e-bay. http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/s...

Re: Good hiking routes up Mount Pacifico and Mount Gleason??
I too am curious about an interesting way to hike Gleason - I need to bag it too. I've read of people combining it with Fox, Condor and Iron. You could take the PCT from Mill Creek! Hmm... Here is a good website detailing a hike to Mount Gleason, http://www.modernhiker.dreamhosters.com ... t-gleaso...

I am hoping to go on a canyoneering trip within the next 1-2 months descending cloudburst canyon. http://www.dankat.com/advents/cldbur.htm There is more difficult canyoneering route in the same vicinity called Supercloud as well, I always get them mixed up. http://www.dankat.com/advents/sprcld.htm I...

I could understand feeling that way at Valley Forge, I noticed beer cans along the trail when I walked there, and graphiti carved in tree bark.
I have always felt safe and isolated at the Mount Lowe Campground.

I have the REI sub-kilo-20 and like it a lot. It is only rated for 20 degrees F, but I bought liner that adds 15 degrees to the rating, making it suitable for near 0 degrees F.

Good hiking routes up Mount Pacifico and Mount Gleason??
I am working on hiking all of the HPS peaks of the San Gabriels and am getting close to having hiked them all, I still have not climbed Mount Pacifico or Mount Gleason, and it is important to me to actually hike these peaks, not just drive up and walk a couple hundred yards. Any recommendation on de...

Hiking on a Friday? What luxury! Thanks for the report and great pics Ryan. I figured you would enjoy the ridge to Copter Ridge summit Travis.
