Re: Owl Canyon & Rainbow Basin

It was a really fun day out there maybe except for the wind, which was blowing hard enough to knock me off balance a couple times and the higher ridges were a bit interesting to traverse. Fortunately they are broad enough to allow for some weaving in the gusts. Really nice campground too...
Thanks ...

Full moon is September 7, so I think one of the later dates on your list is better. All that light really helps with the section below Lone Pine Lake when hitting the trail between 3-4am.

Claremont re-opened the Wilderness Park this afternoon too. 5 mile loop, 9 if you visit Potato Mountain.

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed

Contained doesn't mean out or zero risk. There will be a lot of cleanup before the masses should be tramping around out there, and I'm sure many will ignore closure orders too. Meanwhile there are other places to visit, this is a great time of year to explore the desert. I've never been in the Los ...

I would love to make an attempt to get there. It's been on my bucket list

Maybe starting at the Potato Mtn trailhead would be one's best bet? It would be a big day!

I'm proud to be one of those goofballs. While driving to the trailhead I got to see a really nice sunrise in my rearview mirrors, I arrived a little earlier to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and a breakfast pop-tart. Never having driven through Soledad Canyon, I was impressed with the late season ...

It was a fun hike, different for me because I usually just walk along trails so this was a slightly more technical journey. I spent the night on Saturday, while setting up camp I realized that I didn't have any trekking poles to support my tent- they are usually in my vehicle but I'm driving a ...

I ran across this LA Times article today, apparently it's in escrow right now. I don't see it happening, gathering about $17M from people purchasing exclusive passes. I also don't see how they plan to make snow.

That's a lot of cutting already, I'm surprised. Considering it's no-fee and only six spaces I thought it would be mostly ignored until most everything else is cleaned up.

Sorry I missed it.

Devil Peak, the observatory and Mt. Mooney used to be heavily forested with no views except from parts of the road connecting the three. Which fire burned all of the trees? The station fire?

Hillyer and a side of Devil

This weekend a few of us met up for some camping, hiking, eating and a little drinking. We sat up for a while in the spacious site, having some tequila and roasting a ...
