Grand Canyon South Kaibab-Tonto-Bright Angel

I've been thinking for a while about doing GC again this year so a few weeks ago I checked for space at Mather campground on the south rim, surprisingly I found a few sites available for two nights and booked them. Once again it's nice to be old because with the lifetime pass they are half price ...

I went up to Chilao last week and saw this posted. Glad I got my lifetime interagency pass because they are half price for us old guys.

Thanks for the report. I was just looking at this route last week, driving past Shortcut Saddle prompted my search for a short getaway. Seems like the camps are not currently a good place for actually camping.

Re: Solving the Josephine ridge problem

More pics of the day below.... Although Nate makes it sound fun and easy, it's still a very slow climb - it took 3.5 hours to traverse a little over 2 miles from cars to the summit, although that included a little crag-hopping and photo breaks. It's rocky and there is plenty of small brush to go ...

Potato Mtn

A couple weeks ago Cecelia and I walked up here, the main reason for choosing it was convenience and the fact that it's one of the few front range places open. It was a cool and very cloudy day so we didn't get to see the fabulous views from this 3400-ft behemoth. We parked at the lower lot of the ...

Sounds like you were trading road-walking (speed) for bump-navigating (distance).
Did you get any closer to answering your life questions? When I need to be thinking I stay on the easy trails so I'm not distracted. :)

It was a really fun day out there maybe except for the wind, which was blowing hard enough to knock me off balance a couple times and the higher ridges were a bit interesting to traverse. Fortunately they are broad enough to allow for some weaving in the gusts. Really nice campground too...

Full moon is September 7, so I think one of the later dates on your list is better. All that light really helps with the section below Lone Pine Lake when hitting the trail between 3-4am.

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed

Contained doesn't mean out or zero risk. There will be a lot of cleanup before the masses should be tramping around out there, and I'm sure many will ignore closure orders too. Meanwhile there are other places to visit, this is a great time of year to explore the desert. I've never been in the Los ...
