Thanks, I've thought about bringing my compact loppers on some of these treks.

Snow hike front range
With the big dump of snow last week I definitely wanted to avoid the crowds up near Baldy, plus with so much so fast it's also kind of dangerous and stuff like that makes me less popular at home. So I cast about for a nice front range destination and settled on a couple of unnamed peaks, 2760 and 33...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
I looked at the DPW site today and it says the road is closed at Red Box. I think that means plenty of snow on that side of the hill.
I was hoping to hike San Gabriel on NYD, now I need a different plan. Anyone want to head out then?

I'm also surprised you saw one this late. I've been walking around thinking I don't have to worry about them at this time of the year.

Re: Potato or why we want to live in SoCal
Same picture a week later.... I went up there today for my #OptOutside thing.
I was surprised to see snow up there, the elevation is listed at 3422 feet. I heard from some people that Baldy Road was closed at the Village.

Potato or why we want to live in SoCal
November 22, 2019 I haven't been out much lately due to a knee injury but with the great weather I figured I would make an excursion. Since I live in Claremont I was just going to walk the Wilderness Park but on the drive up there I could see the snow-capped mountains and decided to hit Potato Mount...

Now that it's getting to be stick season with the trees, are the views opening up any more or is it still too dense along the hilltops?

The city has done a lot of work with the stadiums there. I think the view from PNC out across the river is one of the best.
Pittsburgh has come a long way from the image of being a dirty trashy place.

Re: Spruce Knob, West Virginia
I wonder how many state high points are drive ups. Nice forest colors and the lake is great. This one requires at least a 100-yard walk! I took the scenic loop around the summit so it was maybe a half mile of walking. I have put my camera on the hood of the truck at the high point of Kansas and Ken...

I bet the view was great from up there. I was in a big hurry when I stopped by there and my gps was out of signal while on the way to Spruce Knob.

What was the float time and distance? That water doesn’t look like it’s moving very fast.

That bear looks young enough to have a parent hanging around too. Cool to spot one out in the wild.

Mosquitos this year were bad because of so much water due to the heavy snow. Most years they are gone by late August. I've gone up there backpacking in September and not seen any mosquitos.

And I didn't know about the featured image, that's pretty cool. Generally when I compose this stuff it's on the desktop, also that way for most of my viewing. I'll use the iPad/iPhone app once in a while. So for now I will not put captions into the attachments, hopefully the inline part will work. T...

Re: South-North loop
Obviously I can't figure out what Tapatalk is doing with photos, when I preview the post it seems random whether or not they will be put inline and also random if the captions show up. Seems if they are missing and I add text in line then the caption shows up and it's doubled. So I go back and delet...

South-North loop
Aug 28 - Sep 2, 2019 I bailed out. I had planned to go from South Lake to Duck Lake over the course of six days but cut the trip short and exited via Piute Pass instead. I drove up to Lone Pine and easily got a walkup permit for Thursday via Bishop Pass. Sitting at the McDonalds later I talked to a ...

These are great reports, seems like a fine week for hiking. Staying in Leadville certainly helped with acclimation since as you mentioned it's at 10K. There's a cool old bar there, the huge wooden bar is from the 1800's and they claim that Doc Holliday was a regular customer. Also Quincy's for prime...

I just got back from a roam through the Sierra Nevada, South Lake to North Lake and I found a few things..... You were right next to the highest point in South Dakota, Black Elk Peak (formerly known as Harney Peak). It's also in the Mt Rushmore area, I'm thinking of going there later this summer.

I was looking through the Roadside America website while pondering a long drive next month and found this place. Group road trip!
