Black Elk Peak
June 15, 2020 While on my road trip I headed south to the land of the advertising campaign "Meth. We're On It", better known as South Dakota. Formerly known as Harney Peak, the highest point in the state was renamed Black Elk in 2016 by the feds, after the state had researched and decided ...

June 14, 2020 While I was up in Washington contemplating the drive home, a brief look at the map allowed me to consider visiting the highest point in a few more states - just another two days driving was all it would cost so I spent about 35 seconds planning and hit the road. Rain chased me all acro...

June 8, 2020 A few years ago while driving to Oregon I was looking for a free place to sleep and lucked into this spot off Hwy 139 north of Susanville. As I was whizzing by I noticed the brown Forest Service sign and ended up spending the night along the dirt road. The next morning I learned that it...

Register Ridge is pretty damn steep and the trail is a little sandy. Also it's really hot if you don't start before the sun peeks over Thunder.

Good thing you had the rain gear - it's something I tend to ignore when the calendar moves toward summer. And great job getting food for the PCT hikers!
How much of the PCT have you hiked? I've come across a few of your trip reports on the different sections.

I've lived here 50+ years and haven't been there either...
We've had good weather for late May so it is still possible to do these desert hikes. Was that an official FS sign saying they relocated a snake? I wonder how far they get moved and should we be upset about breaking up families.

Re: Bailey Canyon Jones Peak Hastings Peak Mt Wilson Loop
Thanks HikeUp - I had to go back to my pictures from new years day this year to see. I was looking for trail but now I can tell this fire break cut is the route. I didn't know how much downhill was involved in going over that way so I retreated and went down the main Wilson trail and road walked bac...

Re: Bailey Canyon Jones Peak Hastings Peak Mt Wilson Loop
That's a good walk, you still had nice weather for it. In the summer it would be brutal, from the Jones Peak saddle to Hastings is all in the sun. I did that route a couple times this winter, stopping once to clear some brush on the lower part of the trail. I haven't gone up to Wilson from there, wh...

Yes, I left my local area despite the safer-at-home guidelines. Disclaimer: I didn't interact with any other community other than driving through on the roads. With the weather heating up quickly in the last week I knew it might be my last chance for a few months to visit this area. I've driven thro...

Nice snake. Could have been the perfect photo if you had moved the leaf on the rock. Hope you managed to wash off all the poison oak juice afterward.

Yet another epic Taco day, great story here. I agree with you on the lemon-lime Gatorade, the original and still the best. I think they are suggesting to hike on unmaintained trails! Maybe they are leaving the tweet up for interpretation as well? I believe what they're suggesting is broader than that. It seems like they're suggesting that we should avoid specific developed sites, trailheads, and trails. So I don't thin...

Free camping is the best. Thanks for the report! Which guidebook are you using? For a lot of Arizona locations I have used online sources - mostly Todd's Desert Hiking Guide and Hike Arizona. If I ever get back to the Superstitions for some backpacking I will likely need a better source, although C...

Most trailheads are closed by ANF. We are supposed to stay at home and not do any non-essential traveling around. ANF says come out and play on the 'other' trailheads. Twitter link leads to a map showing a bunch of red "-" marks showing all the closures. Screen Shot 2020-04-19 at 9.58.25 A...

Very interesting. Thanks for report. Speaking of Stoddard, I plan on hitting Frankish Peak via the Barrett-Stoddard Truck Trail before it gets hot.
