Re: A Couple Loops In Claremont
If you came down Cobol Canyon then you were going the wrong direction. It's one-way traffic in the CHWP, unfortunately the opposite of my usual direction. And you're not supposed to leave the fire road to check out the higher points, I've been lectured by Park Rangers about that. btw, that's my favo...

That's Potato Mountain behind his left shoulder in pic #1. The second photo looks like the ridge up to Gale Mountain, the dam or spreading grounds would be at the base.

Re: Kearsarge Lakes
As I was about to leave a couple guys walked past, one of them saying it was a rare time he felt good about wearing a mask Heh. That was me, and my son! Nice meeting you! I thought about that as I was walking up later. I remember you coming in the night before and "that guy sure looks familiar...

Kearsarge Lakes
September 5-7, 2020 I wanted to go back to finish my previous adventure at Baker Lake, but when I looked online the walkup permits had not been released yet. However, there was a single permit available for Kearsarge Lakes as someone else must have cancelled a trip. Grabbing that one, I planned to s...

Easy one for me is Timber Mountain, which used to be Chapman. The register box in the tree still says Chapman in weld bead.

Your dream may just be postponed until another time, the mountain isn't going anywhere. And think of all the cool places you got to see while training!

On Miller Ranch Road, just east of where it intersects Miller Lateral Road. We walked through Webb Canyon up to Marshall Canyon this morning. Six miles of shady Live Oak trees and three miles of sunny Baseline Road.

Re: Getting Lost
There are also times where I am cocky enough that I don't care if I lost the normal route as I know that I'm going the right way and the difference is not a concern. I'll do that if I can see where I am going, like up to a peak that is somewhere around home. I always tell myself "I've hiked wi...

Re: Getting Lost
I thought afterward that I didn't take the time to sit down and figure out exactly what I had and what to do. I know I was a little stressed - I didn't feel it at the time but thinking later I can tell that was the case. I don't have a single photo for about 40 minutes, which was basically this time...

Getting Lost
Has this ever happened to you? What did/do you do? I was in the Sierras last month, hiking the Baker Lake trail. My plan was to spend the night at Thunder and Lightning Lake and maybe hop up Cloudripper the next day. This trail starts at the same place as North Fork of Big Pine Creek and then meande...

I saw Sammy play at Day On The Green in Oakland - July 4, 1980. Triumph, REO Speedwagon, Sammy and Blue Oyster Cult. I lost the shirt a few years ago.

I'll vote OK for a first post. It's a really good story, I've had many days where I say "this isn't as much fun as I thought" but then later can't wait to get out there again.

Re: Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails
Man, that's bad about your wrist! Wishing you a good rehab - on the other hand, by then it should be cooler and maybe less traffic. I've been running this around in my head and you are right, the problem starts pretty low on the trail. If we can re-route people from the flat area toward the left it ...

I’m game to do some work. I think I would rather bring cutting tools instead of a giant log. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)
Seems like a little recon would be in order to see where we can make a little improvement.
I’d like Sean to weigh in, he has some experience with local trail builders.

Re: Lessening negative human impacts on the Ski Hut trail, proliferation of use trails and "braiding" of trails
I'm with David on this, I remember thinking "always bear left" on that part of the trail. Now it seems to go toward the edge of the Bowl. The increased traffic in the last 10 years has really softened up the ground and the little trails seem to wash away every winter, and that means more l...

Really good two-day trip. That climb up to the pass seems endless, although it's a really good trail and not too steep. I didn't like going down New Army, it's very rocky.

Devil's Backbone
I'm watching an episode of "Quantum Leap" on NBC and Al tells Sam that the woman in the story ran away and some skeletal remains were found at the base of Devil's Backbone in 1993. Fortunately the family was able to drive their 1964 Oldsmobile station wagon to the spot and lower 13-year-ol...

Re: Mt. Dana
That is some serious elevation gain for a Sierra hike. Granted, the destinations are at altitude but I rarely end up on trails with more than 700 ft/mile. Nice to have the summit to yourself! Great pics, I've never seen Mono Lake look that blue. From the shore it seems almost black with lots of bugs...

Re: Panorama Point
Thanks for posting that! I would have expected such a flat high-point to have a much lower elevation, but that's what it is. I guess the plains are tilted. The plains are actually at a pretty high elevation as the ground slopes up from the Mississippi River to the Rockies. Kansas was nearly 5000 fe...

June 16, 2020 After spending the night deep in the Nebraska National Forest (I didn't even know that existed) I kept driving toward Kimball, the closest town to the Nebraska highpoint. A few miles on dirt roads led me to a bison ranch where I duly submitted the suggested entrance fee and drove on mo...
