New USA highest point
I was looking at my track today in AllTrails and I noticed this little gem in there. A couple thousand feet higher than Denali and it's local! From what I saw today there wasn't any snow so I think this is a great opportunity to score some mountaineer cred.

Webb and Marshall Canyons
On Thursday I went up to Icehouse Canyon with the neighbors and picked up trash, we hauled out six bags although the place looked better than I expected based on recent Facebook photos. That didn't really count as a hike since we barely got past the dirt parking lot for cabin residents. I suppose th...

Re: Teutonia Peak
Cool hike, I went there many years ago and also didn't make the summit. Every time I drive out that way I think I should go back. Apparently from the saddle you contour across the east face and then hit the summit from the south. I've read that rope could come in handy. I got myself a little stuck u...

Old picture from August 2015, trees out on that point are noticeably larger and bushier now.

Re: LADDERS & PAINTED CANYON
Nice pics, makes me want to go out there too. In the photo with you standing in a hole, is a ladder missing or is that a scramble up?
You seem to have a pretty big to-do list. Of course the more stuff I read in this forum the more I realize I need to get out more.

Stoddard and asking if too many people are out hiking
I had a small window of opportunity this weekend so I journeyed up Stoddard Peak. The drive up Baldy Road was slowed by at least 20 cyclists, when one person moves out toward the dashed yellow line to pass others it causes traffic havoc. There were at least 30 cars parked at the dam, and I noticed a...

Re: Sunset and crowds
That is Lookout. The ‘trail’ up is still pretty obvious and rather steep. As mentioned in another thread the obstacle now is the locked gate.dima wrote:Thanks for the photos. Is that Lookout Mountain in front of Baldy? I've never seen it from that angle.

Re: Sunset and crowds
If you put a register there it is gone now. The old spot by the marker post is long since leveled out and the post is gone. Last register I saw there was on the south side of the corrugated metal sheets.

Sunset and crowds
I hiked up Sunset Peak on Sunday, my usual excursion of ridge up and road down from Cow Canyon Saddle. Driving up Baldy Road from Claremont, there is an electronic message board saying that the turnouts are closed and anyone parking there will receive a ticket. Plenty of new little signs are in plac...

Re: GPS Tracking
Thanks, I'm curious about the actual tracking accuracy. My SPOT is supposed to track, I even went in and set the tracking interval shorter and it couldn't keep up with me on a hike heading north above treeline, which should be perfect satellite conditions.

GPS Tracking
Does anyone here use the InReach Mini? It's on sale right now at REI and Costco, a hundred bucks off makes it more attractive. If you have one or know someone who does, what is the reliability of the messaging? I have a SPOT Gen3 and it manages to send maybe half the messages I attempt and also miss...

One set of footprints is always a good picture. That narrow trail goes along a very steep slope which is quite interesting when it gets icy, good idea to get back before then.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
I could see clearly from the downtown Pomona train station, snow on Baldy, Ontario and Cucamonga. Big Iron looked dry, although the north sides of all these peaks will likely keep snow all week.

Re: Goat Peak Aka High Point
I haven't found any weed, but I once found a small 50ml bottle of whiskey in a peak register. Much better than those stainless bottle openers on Ontario, Timber, and Telegraph, that only make you wish you had a beer. Does anyone know the history of those openers? Sounds like something HikeUp might ...

Driving on 210 today toward Glendora, the sign at Foothill Blvd says "Brush fire Azusa Cyn". That doesn't sound so bad - at what point does it turn into a forest fire?

Re: Wildfires
That's an interesting map, basically looks like everything has burned relatively recently. My recollection of these fires is that they were primarily front range, although that's obviously faulty. Those would be easier to contain due to accessibility, this Bobcat blaze seems to be harder to fight du...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork
This will leave a scar on all of us along with the mountains that are so much a part of our lives. The last two weeks have created a hole that won't get filled. Realistically the big picture of mountain and forest history contains fire and all people in those areas have been affected, some to the po...

They quoted a requirement to stay on the official trail, which is the fire road. I asked what about people sitting on the benches, they had to leave the trail to sit there - of course no argument will win out in that discussion.

Re: Warren Gale's Goats
Nice find. As you found out on your other hike that is the 'secret' entrance to the Wilderness Park. Use the free parking area at the top of Indian Hill and go in via the fire road. I don't like going up Gale Mountain road - paved steep and hot.
