Big Echo loop
Sean and I met up on Friday after Thanksgiving for a stroll in the local mountains. My plan was to go up Mt Lowe from below Echo Mountain so I was amenable to ascending via Rubio Canyon, this was really interesting because of the old incline railway bed. The various trails cross and follow the rail ...

Doesn't look too cold since you're wearing short sleeves.
I like Stoddard, not much effort for some really nice views.

Re: Cardboard Tent
Taco and I both use a Tyvek tarp. My review: works OK, but is extremely loud and crinkly. Maybe that goes away after some time, but I'm not there yet. Crumple it up, run it through the clothes washer and hang to dry. Makes it nice and soft and most important, quiet. I should probably add that I use...

Along the John Muir Trail, north of the Palisade Lakes area. I don't know if it was to suggest going across on the tree or taking the actual trail to the right, I did the latter.

How much does it weigh - before and after the rain?
I recall reading on Backpacking Light years ago a guy made a tent out of tyvek.

Last weekend I took a quick jaunt up San Gabriel and Disappointment on Saturday, the clear morning skies made for some fantastic views from up there. After the storm I saw a little snow, the north side of SG was mostly ice-covered so I was careful on the downhill part. There were only a couple sets ...

Re: Mini trip report: Baldy on Nov 18
How was the wind? I was on Sunset this morning and it was very windy, enough so that I didn't spend much time there despite lugging the Jetboil up with me. It blew hard enough to rock me back while sitting on a tree stump and my hands were so cold I couldn't zip up my windbreaker. (no gloves)

I looked around, albeit not very hard, and didn't see any benchmarks. Maybe we'll do a group hike/camp up there and you can show the rest of us.Girl Hiker wrote: ↑Nice pics. There is also two benchmarks by the rocks.

October 9, 2022 A few weeks ago I expanded my world a little bit and walked for a while on the Pacific Crest Trail, going to visit Pacifico. I read some reports and thought I might enjoy the shorter walk from the east side because it's a pretty long drive from home just to reach a trailhead. Anyway,...

Re: Passin' Thru the Sierras
Day 6- Because of the wind, I slept in a bit as the sun was nearly above the surrounding peaks while packing up my stuff. Another delayed breakfast meant I was on the trail relatively early and I reached Bishop Pass in less than one hour. Shortly after that I started to run into day-hikers, which I ...

Re: Passin' Thru the Sierras
Day 5- Starting the day with a downhill walk of about two miles was a nice change, I celebrated with a long breakfast break at the fabulous Grouse Meadow. On reaching the next trail junction, I bid a fond farewell to the JMT and started up the familiar Dust Basin trail. I came down this route in 201...

Re: Passin' Thru the Sierras
Day 4- Since everything was wet I stuffed the tent into my outside pocket and hit the trail before eating, planning to stop where I could dry things out in the morning sun. After about an hour I reached a nice meadow where I unpacked everything and also had some breakfast. Just in the time walking t...

Re: Passin' Thru the Sierras
Day 3- Much better rested, I was having some breakfast when a couple of early hikers walked past my campsite on the trail a couple hundred feet way. I packed up and got on my way, only to run into them about an hour uphill so I stopped to chat for a long while. Taking off again, I was having a Snick...

Day 2- I rose to some frozen pools next to the lake, and finally got on the trail once the sun warmed things up a bit. I took some extended breaks as I followed the lakes down this valley, it was great to just sit and relax next to a creek. I was a little surprised at my slow pace, taking nearly fou...

Passin' Thru the Sierras
September 19-24, 2002 I spent 5-plus days walking from Onion Valley to South Lake last month. The cool breeze every day and below-freezing nights kept the mosquitos away and the late season start made the John Muir Trail a lot less crowded. While there I crossed Kearsarge, Glen, Pinchot, Mather and ...

Re: Anniversary & Birthday Hikes at Lupine
I can't add much to the stories, except maybe the others actually downplayed the wind on Saturday night while we were at camp. It blew pretty hard for a while, then would subside at ground level for a bit while still roaring up in the trees. The view walking up to the high part of Pine Mountain Ridg...

I am planning to come. I will already be there as I am arriving on Friday. It's a long way from San Diego. And I'm retired so spending an extra day should be OK. Okay, what do you think of this plan? Drive to Lupine camp early on Saturday and hike to Cabin Flat and back. Spend night at Lupine. On Sunday hike to Wild View Peak and back (bonus Pine Mtn and/or Pine Mtn Ridge). How early Saturday? Map shows it about 90 minutes for me which likely means more bec...

September 3-5, 2022 I felt lucky when I scored a walkup permit on short notice for Piute Pass, so I headed north after work on Friday. Too many hours later I slept just a few hours in the Alabama Hills, waking up in time to see the sun rise and some morning alpenglow on Mt Whitney. After breakfast I...

I like that area. Definitely shady in the middle section. If you'd been there a couple months ago you could have shared in the grilled cheese fest.
