I think it's only open during hunting season in the fall. Don't know about condition of the road.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Went up Register Ridge and down the Ski Hut Trail today. No traction devices needed. Just some patchy snow that's easily avoided or walked over. Also parked without one of those illegal adventure passes and didn't get a ticket. They might not be giving out tickets at Manker Flat anymore or maybe I j...

Good on you for getting out there. The amount of time that area has been closed is ridiculous.

Re: What Lizard?
We saw one of those lizards in Union Wash a few weeks ago when we were on our way back from a hike of Inyo and Keynot Peaks (Inyo mountain range, NE of Lone Pine). I guess that is considered part of their home range, though. Pretty cool looking creatures.

Re: Need recommendations for a hike this weekend
How about Jones/Hastings/Yale? Roundtrip would be around 9 miles, 4,000 gain. If 4k gain is too much, you could turn around at the top of Hastings and skip Yale.

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes
I believe the area is still technically closed. However, we were up there in October and climbed Josephine, Strawberry, and Lawlor. Started up the Josephine Peak road/trail, then followed the ridge east to Strawberry and Lawlor, then down trail 12W05.2 (as shown on the topo map) to Red Box. The ridg...

I, for one, really enjoyed this epic tale of a truly hardcore mountaineering experience. Nice write-up.
Btw, I think there are other Mt McKinley's besides the one in Alaska. There's even one right here in our beloved San Gabriel Mountains!

Re: Speed traps
I got pulled over on ACH just where it starts to get really windy above La Crescenta. There was a motorcycle cop standing in a pullout with a radar gun. He said he stopped me because 1) I didn't have my headlights on (I had just passed a day headlight area sign - which I ignored becuase I couldn't t...

Re: Register Ridge Trail
I went up Register Ridge a couple of years ago and don't remember any routefinding issues (my memory isn't that great though). I seem to remember there being a decent use trail most of the way. One thing I do remember is that if you plan on descending that way as well, it can be difficult to find th...

I have a Whitney Permit for Sat., 7/2 - Want to Switch?
I have a dayhike Whitney Zone Permit for two people for Saturday, 7/2 (4th of July Weekend) that I can't use. Does anyone want to exchange permits with me for another Saturday or Sunday during the summer? To officially switch permits, I think we would have to call the Permit office at the same time,...

What's wrong with simply holding in your hand as you walk on the ice (no leash) and stowing it in your bag when you don't need it???[/quote]
There is nothing wrong with that. Plenty of people do it. Just don't drop it.

If you hold the axe by the head with your arm straight down to your side, the tip of the spike should be at your ankle.

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
There shouldn't be any routefinding issues on a mountain that is as heavily used as Baldy. There will be a pretty well defined boot track almost immediately after any storm. If you follow the regular ski-hut trail to the top (as opposed to going up the Baldy Bowl from the ski-hut), you won't need an...
