crapload of bighorn sheep at bridge to nowhere - 8/18
http://outdoorsincali.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/img_2241.jpg saw two herds at the bridge yesterday. one herd of at least 7 sheep were on top of the cliff opposite the trail into the bridge. on the trail side of the bridge's cliff, there were 5 sheep (see pic). pretty awesome to see. i'd never see...

Re: best REI store in LA for hiking boots ?
Hey Raphus- Sorry I'm late to the party here. Your biggest selection of boots at LA REI's will either be at the Santa Monica or Tustin stores. Both are large assortment stores (meaning they have a large variety of footwear). Tustin will probably have the most, since it is a brand new store. The rest...

Hey Jim-
We had taken the new trail that goes from A to B. A is definitely a helipad, as I've actually seen SAR land there a couple times. The trail was in gnarly shape and once I get some of my health issues resolved, I plan on heading back there with a rake and some weed trimmers![Smile :-)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Thanks for the TR! Amazing shots. We went up there a few months back but left because they were supposed to get 8' of snow over 2 nights and...well... that would more than bury our little Honda Civic. :-) I definitely need to get up that way again!

ya know, I was scouting Friday and drove by Horse Flats (but didn't stop). What is the hiking like in that area? I know its a big bouldering area.

Re: 6.24.11 - waterman via waterman trail/waterman road
by the way, has anyone ever bouldered on waterman? the summit had a few problems but it seemed like halfway up the road had some really sweet 30-40 footers.
this one was about 40' tall.

6.24.11 - waterman via waterman trail/waterman road
Got out on a great hike today, up waterman via the waterman trail (near buckhorn) and down the maintenance road. It's been over a year since I was up there and it felt like I was meeting an old friend! What a fun little mountain, that Waterman is! Lots and lots and lots of snowplants, just as someon...

Re: Hikes where the sun don't shine?
I second the recommendation on Baden Powell. I'd also recommend going to Waterman (via the Snowcrest area TH), Throop from Dawson Saddle (there's still snow there, even!), and the Islip saddle up to Islip. Most of those areas are well shaded and usually cooler than down here. If you're ever looking ...

Indeed, Blueshammer! If you start at M.S., you follow one trail up to a T. The right goes to San Gabriel Peak and the left to Disappointment. It's a cool part of the front country that I totally recommend.

I took the fire road from just past red box up to Disappointment today. A lot of people combine this with San Gabriel Peak, which is basically across the street, but I was short on time and looking for just a short hike I could push through while staying fairly anaerobic and Disappointment gave me t...

6.10.11 - millard cyn to (almost) tom sloane saddle
Victor and I headed out of Millard today, up the fire road towards Tom Sloane Saddle. We got to the helipad on the west side of Mt Lowe Fire Road and then traveled another half mile towards TSS. However, we hit a point where the trail was so badly eroded and burned that it just didn't seem safe to c...

It's a little bump near Dawson Saddle. I haven't seen it on any maps but it has a cool little sign near it and is just a pleasant little spot.

I saw it two days ago and it was much more passable than it was a few weeks ago... however, theres tons of signage saying its off limits, like everyone else has said.

Got out to two nice little destinations today. Hit up Islip at about 10ish or so and began the ascent towards Williamson via Pleasant View Ridge. Started feeling kinda sick, though, and went back down after summiting. Trail is in beautiful condition. Does anyone know if the Pleasant View Ridge Trail...

6.6.11 - switzer via switzer parking lot on ACH
Just like CM, I got out to Switzer today. It's been wayyyy too long since I had been down there and I've been dying to know how much of this area survived the fire. The good news is, it is in awesome shape and the maintenance crews have kicked butt bringing this area back up to par. Also there wasn'...

CM! I was there tonight too. Musta missed you, started out from the lot about 5pmish or so. When were you there?
Also thought of you on the drive back to La Canada... a big bobcat ran across ACH, then took a seat and stared down my car. What beautiful animals!
