to second rico's link, jennie lakes was awesome. highly recommended. its a 30+ mile loop, pretty doable, beautiful, and quiet. i've always liked playing with dayhikes off of 180/roads end as well.
dinkey lakes is also supposed to be way cool, even though i have no experience in that area.

Garnet Lake from Agnew Meadows Overnighter
Wife and I headed up to Mammoth for an overnight trip Tuesday to Wednesday. We took the River Trail from Agnew Meadows out to Shadow Lake, then jumped on the JMT to Garnet for the night. From there were took a class 2 chute/connector back down to the River trail and out. This may have been my favori...

Jeff, have you been out that way from Road's End? Would it be nicer to do a section of it from the west or east?

favorite part of the sierras?
wife and i are doing a trip up to the sierras in a couple weeks. we have 5-6 days to backpack and she likes "easy" trips. so, sgmf crew - what is the most beautiful spot in the sierras? we've enjoyed the high country around cottonwood lakes, yosemite, jennie lakes, bishop pass, and the min...

Re: elevation sickness/AMS
this is something i've done a lot of research into. there are factors that can contribute (physique, experience at altitude, heredity, speed of ascent, diet) but some people are just more prone to it than others. i know ultra marathoners who have gone up to elevation for the first time and had sever...

Re: Have you ever seen a rattlesnake in Icehouse Canyon?
I saw one two years ago just past the saddle on the way to Cucamonga. He was curled up on the trail but not aggressive at all. It was actually kind of weird. My guess was the temps were so cold that he was lethargic. Either way, don't let snakes keep you from hiking. Give them a few feet of space an...

long lake from bishop pass TH (sierras)
Myself, wife, and two of our friends did an overnighter at Long Lake west of Bishop. The landscape was absolutely incredible and it was a nice reprieve from one of the hottest days of 2013. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/summitascents.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/img_0517.jpg This hike is an ...

Re: Wooshing/Thump audible from Buckhorn
It could also be a grouse, a big chicken type bird. My wife and I were up at Cottonwood Pass a month ago and kept hearing 2-3 thumps that were subtle but noticeable. We asked a ranger what it was and he said that grouse mating calls sound like that; they're percussive in nature and don't really have...

One thing we noticed was that our water level fluctuated drastically near Reyes. Throughout the first day, it went down from maybe6 inches at its deepest to 3." Pot farm?

Hey palmeredhackle!
There were 17 of us... definitely a big group! Some of the group dayhiked into beartrap on the 12th (Wed) afternoon. Did you see them when they hiked into b/t? I'm guessing we just missed each other.
How was BT?

Re: Sespe bpack trip - Upper Reyes Trail Camp
Hey Phil - There is a Reyes Peak that is quite a bit further down the trail. I've never been up to it and I think most people usually visit it via a drive up Pine Mountain Road. However, that road is closed right now. It's supposed to be a good view at the top of Reyes with a bunch of fun bouldering...

Sespe bpack trip - Upper Reyes Trail Camp
Some friends and I hit Upper Reyes from Lockwood Valley for the last 2 nights. Conditions were great - a little buggy and hot as heck, but plenty of water for filtering/drinking. If you haven't ever done Upper Reyes and are looking for a good place of seclusion that isn't too far from LA (2 hrs driv...

Re: cottonwood lakes (sierra) report - fighting AMS
I know it's not always easy to do, but I almost always spend one night at the backpackers camp at horseshoe before going over any of the passes in that area. The one time I didn't was the one time I had a mild case of AMS. Did you have a chance to acclimate overnight before you hiked up? nope, we d...

Re: cottonwood lakes (sierra) report - fighting AMS
Nah, I've had it up on Whitney and towards the top of San G before, but never to this extent. I've gotten dizzy and headaches in the past, but this time I was also coughing blood, having trouble standing, and seeing hallucinations (not the cool ones either :-) ). Does this sound like what you had at...
