Re: does "ultralight" really matter?
Cool, this all makes sense to me. I definitely would never leave behind necessary things like food and water/electrolytes, as well as emergency things and layers. However, I'm pondering more things like using lighter bottles, pack, etc. Still, this is all really helpful and a good conversation. Than...

does "ultralight" really matter?
ok, so here's an honest question that i'd like to get opinions on: i am doing long day hikes pretty often, in the 15-25 mile range. i have been trying to shed ounces (e.g. just changed to a lighter backpack, switching from nalgenes to gatorade plastic bottles, etc...) and have gone from approx 217 o...

Re: looking for ultralight pack - salomon xa20?
Hey Jim- I'm planning on warm weather (late spring to early fall) hikes. My emergency kit (emergency bivy plus medical) weighs about 7 oz or so i'm guessing and it doesn't take up much space...so I'd prob just need room for an additional layer, food, and drinkage. Do you like your osprey? I've tried...

looking for ultralight pack - salomon xa20?
I'm looking at dropping some ounces from my daypack set up. I found the Salomon xa20, which is an adventure racing pack. Pack weight is just under 16 oz, and has enough room for a 3L bladder, 2 water bottles, and a bit of cargo. Anyone ever see one of these in person or heard anything about em? I've...

salomon quest 4d boots - anyone got em?
I'm thinking about getting a pair of salomon quest 4d's. they'd be used for mostly day hikes and overnighters. anyone have any experience with these, positive or negative?

Re: 2.16.11 - eaton visitor center to idlehour camp in the rain
That's what we're thinking... starting at Eaton and going through Idlehour to Inspiration Point and down to Echo, then Lake. That would be a funnnnnn hike me thinks.
I didn't see much poison oak there yesterday but perhaps I wasn't looking. Either way, thanks for the response.

2.16.11 - eaton visitor center to idlehour camp in the rain
Got out to Idlehour in the middle of the showers yesterday. Talk about perfect weather! I think we saw 6 people over the whole 13 mile trek. Because of the rain, it was waterfalls galore. The manzanita near Idlehour was breathtaking too. Anybody ever camp out there before? Seems like a fun overnight...

Re: A short hike... 2-16-11
According to the emergency log, there was a false alarm up near Echo regarding a down plane. Not much more details, but here's where I got that info.

Re: A short hike... 2-16-11
Welcome to the world of Echo, rok. That was my main training ground when I moved out here and it is definitely a fun, relatively mild hike. If you go past Echo to Inspiration Point (and anything else, once it officially opens it [if FO is reading this]) you will find many more treasures in the diffe...

Great tr, Zach! I'm not familiar with Rabbit and Villager peaks. Are those in Anzo Borego? What are the distance/elevation specs on that hike, if I can ask?
Great pics... I'm feeling the urge to check that one out, esp with this colder weather...

hey bert- out of all honesty, i think we've had those tents since about 1972. they've been there quite awhile and i don't think we've ever gotten rid of old ones or even gotten new ones in. however... don't tell anyone... but if you ever wanted to make a guaranteed TON of money, you could start your...
