3.9.11 - monrovia canyon through the overturf trail
My two buddies who were going to hike Los Padres with me today had to bail last second...so, instead, I explored Monrovia Canyon for the first time today. I ended up traveling the Overturf Trail, which was pretty unique. Tons and tons of bear tracks... and I had a bit of a run in with a mountain lio...

I've posted the TR here: http://pasadenahiker.wordpress.com/2011 ... ion-point/ I basically checked out Las Flores Canyon and then went up Echo, Sam Merrill to IP, and down Castle, back to Lake. Castle Canyon Trail is a bit messed up right now with s...

sespe hike this wednesday - cobblestone mtn?
We're thinking about getting out for at least a 20 miler on wednesday. There is an appeal to take the Buck Creek trail from Hard Luck Camp towards Black Mtn, Cobblestone Mtn, Snowy Peak, and that area. Anyone ever had any positive or negative experiences down that way?

Re: Mining Operations / Castle Canyon and other places
that is a muy bueno hike to do at this time of year. how slippery was castle? it can be tricky down there when snow/ice fall. and that little cave is pretty cool. we climbed up there once upon a time and just chilled for a bit. tricky to get to, but a nice resting place. glad you got to experience t...

"Only" 19.5 miles? C'mon ya wuss, what's up with that? Wink Fail is such a strong word. Sounds like a great hike to me. HJ Haha, this is true, Jim. I think I have some peak-bagging tendencies and if I don't get to the top, it can feel like "fail." But you're right... it was a gr...

Hey Norma! I didn't know if one could park near the water tank or not. We thought we'd play it safe and park in the neighborhood of 150 (the block next to the general store). Next time, though, parking at the water tank sounds like a dandy idea. It felt really good to be out in the Sespe again yeste...

2.23.11 Hines Peak - summit FAIL, fun hike WIN
Went up from Sisar Road towards Hines Peak. Turned around at about 5600' give or take because...I'm dumb...and did not realize just how much snow would be up there. The sad answer: a WHOLE lot of snow. However, the hike was beautiful and we took the long way (road) down to make it about 19.5 miles l...
