3.28.11 - mt wilson via sturtevant trail/winter creek loop
I got out with Jason (Illusive) today. We headed up Sturtevant, hit snow that required crampons around 4900,' and took the friendly Upper Winter Creek Trail down. Trail is pretty well, though UWC had some large down trees.

Re: icehouse canyon snowshoeing pics, 3.22.11
That was a CLASSIC itinerary! I'm definitely going to try that sometime. If I get lazy, I might just skip the first four attempted destinations and head straight for Icehouse Canyon. HAHA! Nice, Sam. It was a good two days to make rookie mistakes... we all need those days... now I'm ready to start ...

icehouse canyon snowshoeing pics, 3.22.11
got out to icehouse for a bit yesterday, after our trip to second lake in the eastern sierra was messed up by this weird late season storm. lots of fresh powder, lots of beautiful scenery...and lots of trees crashing and falling over all around us! craziness! not sure how to hyperlink the photos ind...

Re: supplementation for hiking?
glycogen stores can be depleted extremely rapidly when using anaerobic metabolism. the ratio of glycogen / calories changes between anaerobic and aerobic. if there weren't other limiting factors that fatigue you when 'sprinting', you'd probably deplete glycogen stores in like 10 mins! if you were t...

Re: supplementation for hiking?
more or less, yes. there could be other reasons for fatigue, but glycogen depletion is a biggie. even if you are going for a mile run, larger glycogen stores will make you feel like you have more energy (because you do) and you go at a faster pace (burn more glycogen anaerobically) because you have...

I just let Ze pull me in my carbon fiber wheelbarrow. LOL! This is becoming an interesting thread. It's cool to see how different things work for different people. Perhaps one reason I am a bit more intentional about my sports nutrition is that I do not consume dead animals (or live ones) and that ...

actually they've shown that caffeine does not dehydrate you. but it depends on context. I think they show that if you drink the same amount of liquid after drinking (coffee vs non), you have same hydration level. however my own experience says that perhaps you naturally drink less water after drink...

Hammer Gel>>>>>>> Gu(GU) It's the stuff dreams are made of.
Gu sucks. Gu has caffeine (some do) which dehydrates. Gu is gross.
Hammer is good tasting. Hammer is made up of puree. Hammer is wonderful.

Re: salomon quest 4d boots - anyone got em?
agreed. their shoes are great.
i bought the quests and have taken them on two hikes thus far... phenomenal! fit is similar to the XA pro ultra's but the sole is obviously much more durable and the strong midsole support makes a big difference.

i love my xa pro trail runners, but i, too, have noticed they dont last super long. the quests have been through two hikes and are worn in nicely but holding up wonderfully. for the extra cash, i think they will last much longer than the trail runners. will keep you posted.

3.11.11 - manzanita ridge via upper winter creek (chantry)
Got out to Manzanita Ridge via the Upper Winter Creek for just a quicky today. I'm sure everyone on here has done this hike so I'll spare the det's but they're on my blog if needed. No snow visible at all. The bees are out in full force at Manzanita (around that bench that always draws them) Has any...
