A few months back, we noticed more gopher snakes than we had seen in the previous 5 years combined... haven't seen one for a while though.

Now I'm noticing a lot of striped racers and ringnecks, but strangely haven't seen a single rattler this year (and not for lack of trying). :?

Forgot to mention this could easily be stretched out to a full day hike if you include Pine Mountain to the north... looks like a pretty straightforward firebreak hike from there. No shade whatsoever though, so do it on a cool day.

Seems like nobody climbs this peak. Perfect for when you only have a handful of hours to spare, look for a turnout on the west side of Hwy 39 just after you pass the turn off road for the Morris dam.

Very nice, this is my go-to hike since I live right near the trailhead. A great loop is to go up the ridge you guys are mentioning (Bastard Ridge), over Jones and optional Hastings, then down the Connector Trail to the Mt Wilson Trail.

I really like that ridge over to Hastings, though... Obviously ...

A little late posting this, but one of my favorite places to visit after these quick little winter storms is the Crystal Lake area. The Pine Flats area seems to catch a lot of snow, but at the same time it melts fast, so you have to get up there quickly.

Good day up Big Tujunga on Sunday. Parked at westbound mile marker 4.50 and took the south route up. The trail is in surprisingly good shape most of the way, it has definitely seen some recent maintenance, but high up as you approach the south face of Fox it drops away in some pretty inconvenient ...

Mid-week New Year sucks... finally getting out tomorrow, going to check out the south ridge leading up to Fox and Condor Peaks. No idea if it has been maintained at all since the fire, will post a report tomorrow.
