This one hurts. Rest in peace, Sam.
Perhaps maybe there could be a '1001' hike from interested general public to the ski hut in a show of solidarity for the family...or whatever someone has ideas for.
This would be awesome, i think there'd be a ton of interest and could mean a lot to his ...

Great report, Sawtooth is awesome 8)
We took the South Ridge up a couple years back and right as we reached the summit, clouds started building up amazingly fast and we were chased off the peak by a pretty decent winter storm. We essentially did your route in reverse, intending to descend via the ...

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)
Another great conditioning hike (maybe even better than Bear Canyon, IMO) is to start at the Icehouse trailhead and do the Three T's trail to Baldy Notch, up the Backbone to Baldy, down the Ski Hut Trail to Manker, then drop into the stream near the waterfall and follow it downstream past Good ...

Re: Bear Flat Trail (Baldy Village)
Just a heads up, the Bear Canyon Trail from Baldy Village to the summit is closed effective today :x
I know it flooded pretty bad, but could it really have been damaged enough to warrant a full year closure?
The following notice has been posted at the Baldy Visitor Center, and will soon be up on ...

Re: Strawberry Peak Routes
The trail from Red Box is open and in excellent condition if you want to approach from the East.
The Colby Trail is closed, but you can approach the West (i.e. fun Class 3) via the Josephine Fire Road which starts at Clear Creek junction. Head up the road to the Josephine/Strawberry saddle, take a ...

Luck is holding. Saw this handsome fellow tonight.
Nice :) Which trail was this on?
Beautiful shot McP. How do you get them to pose so nicely for you? Every time I see a rattler, they immediately slither off into the brush all angry and whatnot.

Re: Snakes
A few months back, we noticed more gopher snakes than we had seen in the previous 5 years combined... haven't seen one for a while though.
Now I'm noticing a lot of striped racers and ringnecks, but strangely haven't seen a single rattler this year (and not for lack of trying). :?
But yeah overall ...

Re: Silver Mountain - 4/20
I've actually been up there three times, never seem to get the time to take the remainder of the fire break to Pine. The upper ridge that you descended is actually the primary way to climb from the road, you could've accessed that ridge from the bottom and climbed it past the first crossing of the ...

Forgot to mention this could easily be stretched out to a full day hike if you include Pine Mountain to the north... looks like a pretty straightforward firebreak hike from there. No shade whatsoever though, so do it on a cool day.

Been lazy with trip reports lately....
Seems like nobody climbs this peak. Perfect for when you only have a handful of hours to spare, look for a turnout on the west side of Hwy 39 just after you pass the turn off road for the Morris dam.
Park, who knows if an adventure pass is required...? When ...

Very nice, this is my go-to hike since I live right near the trailhead. A great loop is to go up the ridge you guys are mentioning (Bastard Ridge), over Jones and optional Hastings, then down the Connector Trail to the Mt Wilson Trail.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
Been meaning to suggest maybe we make this post a sticky? No point to really ever write a trip report up any of the standard routes, but conditions are always good to know.

Hawkins Ridge - 2/3/2014
A little late posting this, but one of my favorite places to visit after these quick little winter storms is the Crystal Lake area. The Pine Flats area seems to catch a lot of snow, but at the same time it melts fast, so you have to get up there quickly.

It's a really nice hike, just long. It looks greener than when I was there in 2012, or maybe it is just your superior camera. Is there still a tree down over the trail before Fox?
Yeah it's looking pretty good up there, despite these last few "winters" we've had... Your blog post was the only post ...

Fox and Condor Peak
Good day up Big Tujunga on Sunday. Parked at westbound mile marker 4.50 and took the south route up. The trail is in surprisingly good shape most of the way, it has definitely seen some recent maintenance, but high up as you approach the south face of Fox it drops away in some pretty inconvenient ...
