Re: 'Tis the Season - Iron Mountain 4/13/2013

Congrats on the accomplishment. You are totally right on the weather lately, this is the time to make this summit happen. I really enjoyed the rest of your photos, some great pics of really steep sections in there. Thanks. It's hard to get shots on several sections because both hands are already in...

'Tis the Season - Iron Mountain 4/13/2013

Trip Report: This hike sucks, but if you really want to give it a go, this is the time of year to do it. The ascent is absolutely relentless, and the descent even harder, more of a semi-controlled fall down a steep mountainside. We actually finished before dark this time. Photos: https://eispiraten....

Re: Hikes / peaks clear of snow and ice for this weekend

I want to go this hike again this coming weekend but want to make it a loop. what are the options, go down the ski hut trail, or do the backbone trail to the resturant? if the backbone way it looks like a long hike down from there but can you take the ski lift? how many miles are we talking? thanks...

Nice report on Cedar Cyn. Tim and I went down it a few years ago ( TR ) - basically following your exact route in reverse. Nice pictures too! heh Yeah, looks pretty spot on. Cedar could provide a nice way to turn the Three T's into a loop hike (rather than a brutal out-and-back or car shuttle betwe...

Cedar Canyon to Telegraph Peak - 4/7/2013

Spent the night up at Cedar Glen on Friday. Water is flowing well at the stream, there is a bear, and approximately 75 million birds that serve as a highly effective alarm clock at sunrise. Wanting to hike up to Telegraph while avoiding Icehouse Blvd, we decided to try an offtrail route that I could...

Re: Boring Hike Recommendations

Cool, I also never knew that trail had a name. A little late, but it's also an awesome "secret" spot right after a winter storm. It tends to hold onto more snow than any other front range hike, as far as I know. Some pics from this past New Years Eve: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjDqrPJe If you do ...

Awesome route that not many people take (and for good reason) 8) And I love that grassy section on the way to Hastings, definitely has that lion/snake/sasquatch in the grass feel to it... (sort of like the Hiker Bob Connector trail. There are definitely some local residents there) I'm also not a big...

Icehouse Canyon up to the saddle? Then from there, you can opt for Ontario or Cucamonga to the south (might still have too much snow on the north-facing slopes) or Timber and/or Telegraph to the north.

Re: School me on Mt Wilson

Yeah, from Heninger it's pretty much a fireroad the whole way... the two primary routes from the south are Little Santa Anita Canyon from Sierra Madre, and Big Santa Anita Canyon from Chantry Flats, and there are multiple variations of these. Little Santa Anita (aka the Old Mt Wilson Trail, 15+ mile...

Re: Baden-Powell 1/19/2013

Micros the whole way. There were icy some spots down low where full crampons would have been handy but weren't necessary, we were able to kick steps in with no problem. If the temperature drops again, that'll become a bigger issue.

Re: Baden-Powell 1/19/2013

There were a couple small icy spots on the switchbacks just past the Icehouse Cyn turnoff, but nothing that required chains. And yeah, we took the standard Ski Hut Trail up and back. We just had our microspikes, so didn't go up the Bowl or anything. Here's a link to that album, for anyone who's curi...

Ontario Peak 12/21/2012

Headed up Icehouse yesterday, hoping to make it up to Ontario. The canyon lives up to it's name, several really icy sections, particularly near the sections where springs flow across the trail. After the wilderness boundary, the snow gets a little deeper, really dry, light powdery stuff. If you're c...

Re: Baldy summit vandalism

LNT is a great ideal. Or practice. So, you are right in saying that the shelters should not have been built in the first place. But it is not "leaving no trace" when one converts a wind shelter to an obnoxious, and decidedly unnatural, pile of rocks. It's more like "my trace is bette...

Call it what you will, but I'm not lamenting man-made structures being torn down at 10,000 feet, and I've used it for shelter overnight on more than one occasion. ::shrug::

I wonder if they did it in cooperation with the USFS. It looks so official. It doesn't look like a home grown sign at all. Yeah, I was surprised too... they had access to open the gate (not sure if that's USFS as much as it is the ski resort folks?), had a couple cars up there, and a bunch of nice ...

How long has the sign been up there? It's been up for a few months now. I was up there in mid-June and one of the Korean hiking groups was up there installing it and handing out fliers... ...in Korean. :? Long overdue sign, in my opinion. And why is this sign here? No other trail junction, just ran...

I want to do it as a dayhike sometime. How is it compared to C2C? Can't say, as I haven't done C2C, but I'm surprised to find conflicting arguments on either side. I just assumed C2C would be tougher what with its 10,200+ feet of gain or whatever, but I suppose it comes down to how well you handle ...

thanks for sharing! i'm looking forward to my dayhike 8.22.12. Great time out in the Sierras. Lone Pine Lake is highly underrated, mostly bypassed by everyone hustling to get up or down Whitney. I spent a few hours there one day when my permit was thunderstormed out. It's also a really good warmup/...

I have no idea but I would think Baldy is actually Gorgonio and Baden-Powell is Baldy? The gap marked as "Blue Ridge" looks way too wide to me... Those are exactly the thoughts I had at first, too. But a little bit of fooling around in Google Earth proved otherwise. I started by drawing a...

Mount Whitney Dayhike - 7/24/2012

Headed back up to Whitney earlier this week. The forecast Sunday through Wednesday called for a 30% chance of thunderstorms, and when we arrived at the Portal on Sunday we did some calculations and determined it was, in fact, 100% raining. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm8.staticflickr.co...
