My personal favorite would be Ediza Lake below the Minarets and Mt Ritter, hands down.

Re: Sugarloaf and Ontario via Falling Rock Canyon 7/20/2013

McP, did you follow the canyon all the way or did you jump out early and then follow one of the adjacent ridgeline the rest of the way up? I'm guessing the former from your 4th pic. Yeah, we left the canyon to scramble up to the saddle between Sugarloaf and Ontario, then took the ridge the rest of ...

Cool pics, love that panorama! We were over on Ontario when those clouds rolled in, it was a very welcome surprise. Got pretty soaked, but didn't mind at all :D

Sugarloaf and Ontario via Falling Rock Canyon 7/20/2013

Finally got up and explored Falling Rock Canyon yesterday. Some really fun Class 3 scrambly stuff, and overall not nearly as difficult as I thought it'd be. Pretty steep once you exit the canyon and head up to Ontario, but definitely preferable to hiking up Icehouse Blvd on a Saturday morning. Nice ...

Awesome about the lions, not so much about the creeper with the flashlight, although I'd also suspect it was just another nearby camper checking out the cats. Were they close enough for you to hear their footsteps?

Baldy Sunset Hike - 6/28/2013

The best way to beat the heat is to not deal with it at all. But that doesn't mean you can't hike... We headed up Baldy last night to catch the sunset. Hit the trail just as the sun dipped below the ridge and breezed up to the top. We saw 4 people the entire time- two down near the trailhead, and tw...

Thanks for the compliments, everyone. :D I thought there might be some kind of use trail, but now thanks to your hard work I don't have to find out the hard way! We thought there would be too, but nope. A couple game trails here and there, but overall you're completely on your own on the ridge. Cong...

Pine Mountain Ridge - 6/22/2013

For years I've been obsessed with Pine Mountain Ridge as seen from the summit of Baden-Powell. Finally got around to hiking it on Saturday. We drove up to Vincent Gap and hit the trail about 8:15am (given the full/supermoon thing, we intended to be out long after dark). Pine Mountain had that blue t...

Ross Mountain - 6/7/2013

Uncle Rico recently posted a pretty spot-on report of this same route , so I won't go into too much detail... I wasn't quite sure what to expect on this hike, as most reports I've read indicate that it's not overly difficult but it is listed as one of the "toughest dayhikes of the SGs" ove...

Re: Cooper Canyon and Winston Peak - 5/24-5/26

Thanks, all. Those pictures are so gorgeously vivid. Do you do anything post-processing to your pics? The only processing I have to do is cropping and a bit of a contrast bump on some of them. The colors come from the 'Vivid' setting on the camera, don't think I'll ever buy anything other than a Pow...

Cooper Canyon and Winston Peak - 5/24-5/26

Quick little report on an overnight trip last weekend. Trying to avoid the crowds, given that it was Memorial Day weekend, we decided to avoid car camping and opted for an easy hike-in camp. The middle high country has always been one of my favorite areas, and after hearing water was still flowing i...

Re: Sierra Madre to Mount Baldy

I'd think you could stash water in plenty of places ahead of time. Yeah, my main concern is through Shortcut Canyon and the burn area. Not too comfortable even filtering the water up there considering all the poodle dog bush and fire-retardant-whatever-stuff-they-drop-on-fires that might still be i...

Sierra Madre to Mount Baldy

Not sure if it's really feasible this year, given the extremely low water levels, but I'm in the early stages of planning a superultramegatrek from my front door to the top of Baldy. A very rough estimate of 80 miles, split up over 8 days. No reason to rush, 10 avg miles a day with a full pack is en...

Mcphersonm80 Yeah, I thought about the options I know the Wilson trail meets the Toll road, but not sure about a connector. Is this "connector" different than the actual trail? The Bailey. I have never been on that one. I saw the trail but did not know where it went, and did not want to c...

Re: Jones peak to wilson toll from sierra madre

Love that route. :D You're right about that metal cable, seems like it'd be a nice aid until you grab it in the wrong spot. I don't bother with it. And I've also noticed an abnormal amount of ticks this year, usually in the areas overgrown with mustard flowers... 'tis the season, I suppose. A nice a...

Nice, those reports are spot-on. I wasn't aware of the route from the saddle down to the Village that you marked in blue.... Is that the "Erv Bartel" canyon referred to on the Sierra Club site? Definitely would have gone that way to avoid the Cow Canyon bit and walking back down the road ...

Re: Lookout Mountain - 4/20/2013

Great day out there... Do you think it would be easier to reverse your route, going up via Cow Canyon Saddle? Would it keep most folks out of the brush? Yeah, I think the most common way up Lookout is that out-and-back from Cow Canyon Saddle. It is washed out in spots and a little hard to follow to...

Lookout Mountain - 4/20/2013

I had been wanting to do this one for a long time, finally got around to it on Saturday. The peak itself is nothing extraordinary, in fact it's not really even a peak in its own right, just one of a series of bumps on Baldy's enormous south ridge. However, the views from the top, the challenges of g...
