Early Winter on Baldy

Fun conditions up on Baldy this weekend. The snow was patchy up to the hut, but from there it was a nice preview (hopefully) of what's to come. We used nothing more than micros, and it was probably doable in regular boots, but won't be for long if temps stay low. By far the most people I've seen up ...

Re: Clamshell, Mack, Rankin, and Monrovia Peaks

You got a late start! I think you may have been right behind me I noticed some people coming up the fire road behind me who looked like they were out for more then a casual hike. I started from the car at 8:20, so hit the fire road maybe 5-10 minutes after that. Ah, closer than I thought. We got st...

Monrovia Peak - 11/17

David R posted a nice detailed description of his hike up Monrovia here . Coincidentally, we took the same route up yesterday. Not much to add to his report, just to emphasize that this is definitely the time of year to do it. Brushy, steep, and fun. We chose to descend the same way we came up. You ...

Re: Clamshell, Mack, Rankin, and Monrovia Peaks

Nice report, David. We actually went up the same route yesterday, saw your footprints here and there in the sandy sections and noted your signature on the back of the register... Figured I might see a report here today. Couldn't believe the amount of bear scat on the entire trail, seems they're doin...

Re: Crystal Lake (& vicinity) Report

That must be and OLD photo. HJ I'm curious when that was taken, also. Interesting to compare the water level from this shot I took in April 2011 (after our last decent winter): https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm6.staticflickr.com/5106/5612611792_627a68b329_z.jpg Any idea on the date of tha...

Re: Good Canyon - 10/21

Oh, wow, that's a nice Bighorn pic. Was there any water still streaming up higher in Good? It was flowing pretty well in a few spots, yeah. Probably first around 7000' or so, and then it was flowing really well up where the canyon splits, with the left branch going up towards the top of Big Horn Ri...

Nice report, love that pano from the top of Iron.

How did your friends like the slog back up to Baldy? I once hiked as far as Gunsight Notch and turned back, too. That hike back up was absolutely terrible (in a good way, of course :) )

Good Canyon - 10/21

Finally made it up to Good Canyon. Sean does a better job than I could describing it in his report here , so just a short report and some pics to post. I don't really have anything to add to his report, his is a pretty spot-on description of the route. We started lower, at one of the lowest switchba...

Sawtooth Peak/Mineral King Backpack - 9/20-9/22

Headed up to Mineral King this past weekend. I've been wanting to go here for years and finally set aside a couple days and drove up early Friday morning. Weather was nice and mild, and the skies were perfectly clear. Forecast for the night had a low of 20 degrees though, so we packed a ton of layer...

Re: Car Camping?

From my experience, Buckhorn is probably the most laid back of all of the campgrounds, mostly because it takes the longest to get to so the really rowdy bastards never really make it up there. Definitely worth the drive up (which isn't a bad drive at all) and some nice easy hikes in the area too.

Re: The Good Canyon Experience

Anyone we know? Hope not  Sean, We're probably heading up Good Cyn tomorrow. We're thinking of parking down near Icehouse, crossing the road and heading upstream to the mouth of Good. From the top, we'll then probably descend the Ski Hut Trail to the bottom of SA Falls and stick to the strea...

I always like trying to identify peaks when I'm up there. If interested, here's my take on the view from Langley:

Re: Mine Gulch via Vincent Gap trail

The trail from Vincent Gap down into Mine Gulch is easy to follow all the way to where it meets the Prairie Fork. From there if you're continuing further down the East Fork, you're on your own, but navigation is obvious through that stretch anyway.

Re: Falling Rock to Sugarloaf, Ontario, and Bighorn

Great report, David. Did that route a few weeks back, lots of fun. :) Since you've descended the canyon a couple times, maybe you'd know... would it be possible to skip the exit up to Sugarloaf and ascend the canyon the entire way up to False Ontario without exceeding Class 3 (in other words, how hi...

Love that area up there. I've never been to Minaret Lake, but I'm definitely adding that to our next trip up.

Sorry to hear you had to bail out, but sounds like you definitely made the right decision again.

Mount Langley via Old Army Pass - 8/3-8/4/2013

After acclimating at Onion Valley for a couple nights, we headed down to Lone Pine hoping to grab a couple walk-in permits to camp at Cottonwood Lakes but with no luck. Dayhike? Sure. After some delicious pizza in town, we headed up the ridiculous Horseshoe Meadow Rd. Lots of rock and slides on the ...

Onion Valley to Kearsarge Pass - 8/2-8/3/2013

We headed up on Friday to Onion Valley, planning to acclimate for 2 nights before heading over to Mt Langley. The campground is gorgeous, at 9200' nestled in a small hanging valley between two massive ridges of Sierra granite. Perfect place to get used to the altitude before heading out for any of t...

Re: Sugarloaf and Ontario via Falling Rock Canyon 7/20/2013

awesome pics mcp. this looks fun. the trailhead for this is icehouse, but you turn right early on down that trail, right? how long of a hike up the canyon is it to ontario peak? Yeah, the entrance to the canyon is probably about 1/2 a mile up the Icehouse Canyon Trail. Keep an eye on the right (sou...
