I'm noob-ish. Been lurking for a long time though, and have posted a few times now, but I just got a sticker yesterday from the Ski Hut register 8)
Are there still plans for the forum to be migrated over to the actual eispiraten.com domain? I remember reading about that a while back...

First Winter Summit of Baldy - 3/13/2011
Yesterday was my fifth summit of Baldy overall, first in the snow. I always figured that winter was off-limits and only reserved for expert mountaineers, but then I saw some of the trip reports on this site back in November/December and decided I absolutely had to summit Baldy in the snow. Using Bad...

Re: Bear Flat - Baldy - Ski Hut
Happy Birthday and great trip report/pictures!
I agree with Dave G about birthday hikes... Mine was last Tuesday, and though Iron Mountain wasn't as welcoming for me as Baldy was for you, there's still something inexplicable about it that makes it stand out more than a regular hike.

Re: It's lottery time!
Got denied last year, I think I was too specific with the dates and was looking for an overnight for a party of 4. This year I scaled back to just 2 of us, and provided dates ranges instead of specifics (i.e. any overnight permit between August 1-6) Hoping for the best, otherwise we'll likely drive ...

Re: Bears in Winter....?
Ah, cool. The only thing keeping me from being certain that it was a bear was that I thought they hibernated... good to know. ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif)

Bears in Winter....?
Forgive me if it's a silly question, but should our local bears be hibernating right now or might they be up and about? The reason I ask is that we hiked up the Heaton Flat trail towards Iron Mt on Tuesday and along the way ran across a good amount of scat that looked an awful lot like the bear poo ...

Awesome, awesome shots and trip report. Alta Peak is a favorite of mine, proposed to my fiance up there last September. Sitting in a cubicle in the Valley, these pictures are making me extremely jealous. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Re: Baden-Powell - 1/15/2011
It was a lot more powdery than I thought it would be almost the entire way up, but still had a little crunch to it on the top layer, if that makes sense. Nothing that would hold any weight, though. Then up as we gained the ridge, ice was everywhere and we had to work pretty hard to kick our steps in.

Baden-Powell - 1/15/2011
My brother and I wildy underestimated how well the northern slopes hold onto the snow... Original plan was to trek from Vincent Gap all the way over to Little Jimmy for the night, but it became apparent before even leaving the car that that wasn't going to happen, luckily we had already anticipated ...

Awesome conditions on Baden-Powell right now, though, a bit of everything. Will probably post a trip report later on today.

Cool, thanks.
Last I heard it was opened up to Vincent Gap, but they may have opened it further and this site doesn't show any closures:

Re: Vincent Gap Trail (Mt. Baden-Powell)
Is there a reliable website to check on the status of ACH? I'm hoping to head up the weekend of the 15th (weather permitting), hit BP, Throop, Hawkins, Islip, and spend a night at Little Jimmy Camp. So far, it doesn't look like any big storms are headed in, is it safe to assume I'll be able to park ...

Re: Baldy Ski Hut - 12/31/2010
Great feedback all. Makes sense and pretty much what I already figured... Conditions are everything, and like I said in the original post, they were perfect on Saturday. "Not every day's a summit day; and that mountain isn't going anywhere." Words to (literally) live by. Just for fun compa...

I also used micro spikes going up Ice House canyon all the way to Bighorn on Sat.. With the cold temps it was perfect conditions for the little guys. But on Tue. the 28th going up the bowl I used crampons and the ice axe. There were some patches of ice off the top that were so hard that even with c...

Baldy Ski Hut - 12/31/2010
Decided to end the year in style and hike up to the Ski Hut. Cut me some slack, it's my first time on Baldy in winter conditions... baby steps. 8) Now, I've hiked in snow before, but never quite this much. I think I can safely say that conditions were perfect . The road up was relatively clear of tr...

Re: Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
Simonov, how about we organize a weekend get together for anyone who wants to do a general ascent of Baldy? Hike up to the hut, talk about stuff, go into the bowl, do self arrest and other training bits, then go to the summit. One of those kinda deals. If anyone is interested, say yeah. I'd join yo...

Great advice, everyone. Thanks! I've ordered some of these guys: http://www.kahtoola.com/microspikes_details.php On the way up, I'll constantly be asking myself how I'll be getting down the same areas... I'm not expecting the summit, added bonus if I make it all the way, but I'm not at all opposed t...

Hiking Baldy (and surrounding peaks) in Winter
Okay, the recent trip reports up snow-capped Baldy have really made me want to get up there this winter. The problem is that I've done minimal hiking in winter conditions... I've done Ontario Peak after a light snowfall, covered in snow past the Icehouse saddle, some parts icy but nothing I couldn't...

Wow, great shots! I've been up Baldy numerous times but never in conditions anywhere close to that. The summit plaque shot in your album is awesome. Don't know if this is thread worthy or not, so I'll ask here. How do you get started in these types of hikes? Obviously crampons and an axe, and the kn...
