Re: 07162012 Baldy Bear

Freaking awesome, I would love to see a bear on Baldy. But I also echo Dragon's concern... The amount of traffic that trail gets, it's hard to believe an idiot or two won't toss him some food. On Brokeoff Mountain up by Lassen recently, I saw a squirrel literally jumping on people. Think it had been...

Re: Ediza Lake Backpacking and Mount Ritter Attempt - 7/8/2012

Thanks, everyone! 8) HJ- Some say you can actually do the entire SE Glacier route without ever exceeding Class 2 (heavily dependent on conditions, of course), but most reports and what I'd say having just been up there is that it's a lower level Class 3 (minimal exposure) by standard (non-Norman) de...

Ediza Lake Backpacking and Mount Ritter Attempt - 7/8/2012

Took my first backpacking trip up in the Sierra this week. We were up at Lassen for the 4th of July, then headed down the 395 to Mammoth, where we spent a couple days in town before heading into the backcountry. I have no idea how much my pack weighed, but it was incredibly heavy, I would guess appr...

Re: Mt Lukens via Stone Cyn Trail -summit 1038-

Cool, thanks for the report. Encouraging to hear about the bear up there, good sign of recovery. Any further details on the condition of the trail? I'd assume, like most other trails in the burn area, that poodle dog is everywhere and poor, sandy tread? Looking forward to getting back up there, as t...

Eclipse on Baldy and San Antonio Ridge - 5/20-21/2012

There were only a handful of people up there (10 or so) and four of us stayed the night (three in my group, one solo). Perfect conditions, if you've never seen sunset or sunrise on Baldy, you're missing out. Windy overnight, but that's to be expected. Day one was straight-forward, climbed up the Ski...

Mount Islip - 4/15/2012

This past weekend, we wanted to get one last little bit of winter with this stormed that rolled through late in the week... I figured the high country may have gotten a few inches so headed up to Crystal Lake. The original plan was to head up to Windy Gap, climb Hawkins, Throop, Burnham, and Baden-P...

Trying not to sound like a jerk, but the information you're providing is incorrect and you may want to give the ranger station another call (or check with Whitney specific boards www.whitneyportalstore.com or www.whitneyzone.com ). With the exception of the very few North Fork and alternate-starting...

Re: Whitney 2012

I am sure everyone already knows this, but just in case...60% of the Whitney Zone permits are reserved for daily walk-ins. They also release the next day's permits after 2 PM the preceding day (have to wait for the next day obviously), so you can score either way if your time is flexible. That's no...

Good stuff up Bear Canyon yesterday.

Add up to 20" from today and this week might be the time to climb Baldy from the village between now and December or so....

Patchy snow, windy, spikes useful on the shaded switchback section on the Ski Hut Trail but not necessary.

heh Yeah, I searched quite a bit for a name/route description/trip report/anything on this one and found nothing. When I thought of the name Bastard Ridge, it was too appropriate in too many ways not to stick. The day I see that written on a USGS topo map is the day I consider all of my life goals c...

Jones Peak via Bastard Ridge

Having recently moved to Sierra Madre, I've been searching for variations up the Old Mt Wilson Trail and Bailey Canyon... I noticed an old, somewhat overgrown firebreak going directly up Jones Peak's southeast ridge and gave it a shot last week. The route starts on the regular Mt Wilson trail, then ...

The key is to go when the weather is right. Anything above 80º and you'll be hating life before you're even half way there. Time it right, and it's easily one of the best treks in the SGs.

Great shot of the late day sun! There's something about that trail past First Water... the colors seem more vibrant than other similar trails and it goes through a nice variety of terrain, definitely one of my favorite front range hikes. It also helps that the trailhead is a short 2 minute walk from...

Crunchy Baldy via Register Ridge - 1/22/2012

Finally got around to heading up Register Ridge. Steep, secluded, awesome. Only ran into one other guy on the ridge, and very few all day (descended Ski Hut) Conditions were chilly and dry up until around 8500' or so, and then virtually every square inch was covered in a layer of ice and it was free...

North Backbone (Pine/Dawson/Baldy) ranks way up there for me.

Iron from Heaton Flat is cool too, even if only up to the saddle. Bear and cat scat along virtually the entire route always adds a lot of....... atmosphere to the experience.
