Re: Cucamonga Canyon

Does anyone have any info on hiking down Cucamonga canyon from the saddle past the top of Ice House Canyon? Who has done it, what should I expect, etc.

Re: Tresspassing Etiquette or Not

In Cali, Generally, land with out a structure on it must be posted at access points, fenced, irrigated, or freshly tilled to be trespassed on to. I too have come across land that is illegally marked or posted-our foothills are rife with this problem ie The Claremont WIlderness. Research is the way t...

Re: Wildlife images

New to the SG Mtns. and this forum. Love hiking and use trail/game/wildlife motion sensor cameras as a hobby. Can anyone point me in a good general area in the SG Mtns that holds decent numbers of mammals (deer, bear, lions, bobcats...). A canyon, area, stream or similar. Also, any location of a pe...

Re: Hunting Season

In remote areas they can get away with it. Try it when houses are nearby, and the public stink would be huge . HJ No doubt about it. And that stink will be bigger now. Any/every body who lives within this mysterious undefinable zone has to pay about $150 per year to subsidize CDF, excuse me, Cal-Fi...

Re: Hunting Season

I dunno. I believe it would take a very candid, and honest, scientific explanation by the USFS re large scale controlled burns and the benefits of such burns. CB would reduce, dramatically so, the fire and flood danger to structures, not increase them. The real issue is the USFS has created a fire f...

Re: Hunting Season

I agree. For some unknown reason science trumped fire overtime pay. If I remember at the time, the fire side was stretched pretty thin and the mandatory minimum of boots on the ground simply could not be meet. So they pulled back and went to plan B. Let er rip! Pretty controversial at the time. Lots...

Actually, that very thing happened (happens) in Yellowstone.

Re: Hunting Season

Tracker is absolutely right. Its all about habitat, and in S-Cal habitat is dictated by fire...or lack thereof, period. When we hike in our mountains we naturally assume that the landscape, vegetation, tree's, animals etc. are what existed for hundreds of years. However, we are wrong. The advent of ...

Re: BEARS...WHAT? DON'T PLAY DEAD ON A BEAR ENCOUNTER?

As a side note about when bears travel. I set up a trail camera on a water guzzler during the summer. The area is closed to vehicle traffic and is not traveled by foot...only a few bicycles daily. Although I am certain, based on prints, that multiple deer, coyotes, bob cats, mountain lions(3) etc li...

Re: BEARS...WHAT? DON'T PLAY DEAD ON A BEAR ENCOUNTER?

No need to play dead with a bear, unless you're being attacked by a grizzly. Black bears will kill AND eat their food, so playing dead is kinda pointless. However, consider yourself lucky to have seen a bear at all while hiking. They are there, but, usually you don't see them. Black bear attacks in ...

The Breeze will do just fine. Wear it around town for a week then take it on some hikes. I have the Vasque Wasatch which has done incredibly well. However, I've recently began transitioning to a much lighter pack weight ( in preparation for the JMT) and wear a pair of Lowa Tempest Mids that are fant...

Rescue/SAR @ San Antonio Falls

On my way down from the hut today about 200 yards from the falls I started to hear someone yelling "Help", maybe 6-7 times. When I reached the look-out I could see some folks repelling down the falls, however, I'm not sure it was them that yelled out. Either way, a small crowd had gathered...

I guess I could have been more detailed. Yes, I'm looking at sometime in July for maybe a couple of nights. I'm going to be trying my new Ebay special Copper Spur. It looks like I need a permit for overnites. From what I've read, squidos are prevalent...and maybe a bear or two. So, I guess I'll need...

Rattle snake vaccination: google Red Rock biologics. I personally spoke, at length, with the doctor/vet who invented this product and she is truly the subject matter expert. My Vet in Upland, Ken Tudor, (909)982-3288 gives the vaccine and he has extensive experience with 'outside' dogs and knows the...

Re: BackPacking with a dog

***Off topic alert***javascript:emoticon(':D') Unfortunately, rattlesnakes are a way of life in our area from April-ish to November-ish. I've done three things in the past. 1. I had the Vet inoculate with anti-venom (redrock), 2. I have always had my dogs snake avoidance trained, and 3. they stay ou...

BackPacking with a dog

Hello all, I realize this topic can be controversial, however, it's not intended to be. I have a new Brittany puppy who will be accompanying me on some of my hikes and overnighters, mostly S-Cal. I'd like to hear about experiences both good and bad, that you have had. Everything from animal encounte...

Joshua Tree and other locals

Hello all,
I'm not really wanting to do an overnight trip in the snow, so. I'm looking for advice on other locals. Can anyone offer some advice for an overnighter, maybe 10-15 mile trail. High desert maybe... Just looking to expand my area a little.

Relay for life American Cancer Society.

A couple of years ago my wife 'drafted' me to participate in the local American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. Basically, this is an event where cancer survivors, their family and friends set up at a local park and walk/run a closed course relay for 24 hours. I had no idea what to expect, however,...

Not sure where you keep the dog, however, the dogs feet need to be exposed longtern to a rough surface, not carpet. Something like concrete, sand, dirt w/rock and pebbles, etc. There's also a product I've used for making the pads tuff'r. I forgot the name. Do a google search, its sold for gun dogs a...
