Re: Echo Mtn Loop

Girl Hiker -- Very nice pix! Sean -- I know the feeling...but there's hope! I first set foot in the San Gabriels in 2002, at age 56...did 43 of the HPS peaks (including Rattlesnake and Big Iron) the next year at 57...did Baldy for the 12th (and sadly last) time in 2012 at 66...did the Brand Firebrea...

Re: Plane wreck below the ski hut

Thanks for the Idoni link...that confirms the wreck is beyond (north of) the Ski Hut, not south of it (I wasn't been able to go beyond the Ski Hut since my last visit to Baldy in 2012)...Dima knows much more than I do, so follow his info from there...but Edward's info rings a bell...I took the photo...

Re: Plane wreck below the ski hut

I can post a photo...but can't remember exactly it was...definitely west of Ski Hut Trail...I think south of Ski Hut, but might be along the part after you cross across Baldy Bowl and get up to the west ridge...try both, it was pretty easily spotted from the trail...see if I can post a pic of it fro...

Re: OnlyCairns

Don't say duck to a long-time bird photographer who was told early in his hiking career to watch for the ducks marking the trail turnoffs, and wondered how they kept them from flying to other spots after being placed... I still call them ducks, by the way...but no longer listen for quacking... ;o).....

Yeah, neat hike...and nice pix!

The volunteers who man the fire lookout can drive about halfway there...but not sure I'd want to park there during an earthquake...

Re: There's a bench on Hastings Peak

Very cool! By the time I discovered hiking, I was a long-time birder...so when I first read about ducks marking trails, I wondered, "What keeps them from wandering off?" I liked trail ducks except the ones on Twin Peak East...there were so many, couldn't tell which one I should head toward...

Re: TR: PCT - Blue Ridge to I-15, Memorial Day Weekend 2019

Wonderful write-up and photos...some beautiful scenery, beautifully recorded! I got a ticket for parking at Guffy when I did Pine and Dawson in 2003 (gate on road to trailhead was locked at Guffy despite website saying it was open)...that's the only part of that area I've ever seen. Thanks for showi...

Re: Hoyt Mountain

Yes, coming down Hoyt is the scariest thing I ever did hiking (and I did manage to do Big Iron in 2003, Rattlesnake in 2003 and 2004, and Sugarloaf via Falling Mike...er Falling Rock Canyon in 2005)...came down those standing up, but like HikeUp, came down Hoyt on my butt, too (in 2013 at age 67)......

More not-current info...but I tried that road from Red Box to Barley Flats in September 2014 and found it too brushy...so did Markham and Lowe from Eaton Saddle instead (and met "Don Viejo," that even-older-than-me gent who'd posted the note about seeking a lady hiking partner, auditions o...

Re: Trans-Catalina Trail - trip report (4/12/18-4/15/18)

Thanks for the good info and pix, and congrats on doing the epic hike! Brought back good memories of Catalina... During my younger days, I flew the family Mooney (4-seat lightplane) to Catalina 587 times between 1969 and 2011 (the Trans Catalina Trail didn't exist most of that time, but saw a lot of...

Re: Another bird ID!

I think you're right with Wilson's Warbler... A lot of birds have been showing up out of their normal habitats this year...we had a Brown Pelican for a month at Lake Balboa (Sepulveda Basin, San Fernando Valley) back in May and a Black Skimmer for a day a couple of weeks ago (both unusual away from ...

Thanks for the nice report and pix! The water thingie reminded me of my hike up Fox and Condor in 2003…I ran out of water about 5 miles from the car on the way back, and swore I’d never allow that to happen again… The very next week, I set out to do those Shoemaker tunnels again (last time I’d set o...

Re: Which Way To Occidental?

Funnee... I "discovered" the HPS peak list in 2002 (at age 56), and in October, having scaled 8 of their peaks, headed out one afternoon to do Markham and Occidental from Eaton Saddle to make 10...Markham was a little scary for a newbie but made it...but gave up on Occidental Route 2 after...

Nice report and pix! I did the opposite…all my Jones and Hastings hikes were from Bailey Canyon via the route you describe here, while I did it just once via Bastard Ridge (on my 67th birthday in 2013, after learning about it from a report on this forum)… I never scaled that summit rock on Hastings ...
