For those of you who do not know what this memorial means... http://ghostbikes.org/
It is brilliant!
Condolences to the rider's family.
I hope they lock this "kid" up for a LONG time!!!

Re: Sports Chalet
atomicoyote I couldn't agree with you more about REI HB! I felt so fortunate when the HB store opened up (I live a couple of miles away). I couldn't go near that mall without stopping in just to look. Now, I pass by without a thought. The store is almost depressing. Unfortunately for us in SoCal, th...

Re: Sports Chalet
simonov You are right about the clothing! The new REI Tustin store looks more like The GAP than an outdoors oriented store. The store is beautiful, but it's mostly clothing now...and it's non - technical "I wanna look like I go outside" clothes. I guess we have to drive to Mammoth to find ...

Re: Sports Chalet
Hey Tracie! I was a little suprised at the varied selection at the Huntington Beach Sport Chalet. They have some high end stuff and some real cr@p. Curt and I were looking for climbing helmets last year. I found my BD Half Dome at REI...easy find. Curt had a hard time finding the right fit. We hit b...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
Hi Dave, I was refering to filling up from the spring above the hut. It was still covered up with snow, so I know it was pretty safe to drink unfiltered. Although, once I did see a woman of the Asian persuasion coming out from behind a bush about 2 feet from the water's edge...luckily the hut was lo...

Re: General Conditions
Wow, that is incredibly sad. Only four years old? I would have been devastated. Kudos to you for getting back out on the trail, it must have been difficult. I'm sure she's watching over you from above (in between chasing squirrels...lol).

Re: General Conditions
Sounds good Patrick, I'd love to hear that story! I'm on those boards too. I don't look at SP as much, mainly WPSMB, San J, and here...same name also. You're the Patrick I was thinking of. I've been reading your posts on San J for a while. We probably have a dozen+ friends in common on FB...lol! BTW...

Re: BALDY - Archive of Mt. Baldy-related Discussions
We just had a discussion about that very thing when we climbed the bowl in April. We were running a little low on water as we aproached the hut (which was locked on our way up). I thought about filling up from the spring, but luckily Kurt Wedberg (SMI) had opened the hut and we were able to tank up ...

Re: General Conditions
Hey lilbitmo (Patrick? from the San J board?) DILF...love that! I 'm with ya on the hope for BIG SNOW in 2010/2011! I did my first peak on San J in Feb of this year - snowshoes up, crampons down. That got the ball rollin' for Baldy and I love it! There's alot to be said for backpacking in the Sierra...

Re: General Conditions
Here's the Pano of the Baldy Bowl from our hike yesterday. We hiked the road up to the notch and did the Backbone trail for the first time. Having climbed the bowl 5 times in winter conditions, I have to admit that I like the snow MUCH better! I'll post more pics of the trail conditions as soon as t...

Re: Two Noobs Summit Baldy (2nd attempt) via The Bowl 3/13/10
Thanks Norma! We cut our teeth on San J about a month ago and caught the fever...which led to the snow travel course with Sara & Kurt...and viola! Baldy via the bowl. I guess San G would naturally be next (we haven't snow camped yet)...or maybe something in the Sierras? Any suggestions? It's all...

Re: Two Noobs Summit Baldy (2nd attempt) via The Bowl 3/13/10
Thanks mve! It was definitely a special day for both of us...and hopefully the next one will be as good or better! When are you planning to lug that big camera of yours up the bowl again? We love your pics and TR from the last Baldy solo. We both shoot Nikon DSLR's and were really inspired by your e...

Re: Two Noobs Summit Baldy (2nd attempt) via The Bowl 3/13/10
Thanks EnFuego, we'll have to try that next time! If I was in my 20's I would have tried it the first time, but it was a little hairy looking down the chute that we came up... Hey Tracie Thanks! It was quite a challenge for us, but I'm sure you would have no problem with it. We just turned right out...

Two Noobs Summit Baldy (2nd attempt) via The Bowl 3/13/10
My boyfriend Curt and I just got into winter hiking this year. We started with a couple of snowshoe outings in January and summited San Jacinto on shoes Feb. 13th. That got us hooked. We decided to take a snow travel class held by Sierra Mountaineering on Feb. 20th. This class really got us amped up...

Re: Mt. Baldy - 3.7.10
Great pictures as usual Mike! Curt and I were there on Saturday for our first try at Baldy and the bowl. We climbed for about 40 min and the visibility got pretty bad. We weren't 100% sure which direction to go so we turned around, but we plan to try again soon. Thanks for the pics and GPS track. St...
