That shouldn't be hard. It's definitely sucking, alright.

And is that Zach's Fish Fork gang sign I see at the end?

lower reaches of Caltech Nice! Hadn't heard of Caltech canyon yet but you can bet that I approve of the naming, assuming it's a canyon of suitable quality. 8) The Gully waterfall bolt is on the way to becoming undone....still quite safe right now IMO. Re: Clamshell, Rankin, Monrovia, Pine (NHPS)

And back on the original topic, how the hell did you cover that many miles in that brush?! As noted above, really only the first third of the route was in brush. The bulk of the route was on fire roads. On my map, the crosses represent transitions from road to (usually overgrown) trail. (The last t...

I love the dropoff/buckthorn choice! haha Sometime's that's a tough one.... In Rubio there is (was?) a section of use trail where it was poison oak on one side and yucca on the other. In Allison Gulch, Ryan and Miguel bypassed the first rappel in our beta via a route the featured a choice between a...

Re: Clamshell, Rankin, Monrovia, Pine (NHPS)

Did you find any WWII-era Japanese spy equipment? Sounds like there's an interesting story here... what did I miss? I did collect a few of what looked like multi-layer insulation blankets from some form of reconnaissance craft. But why the Japanese would mark them "You're My Sweetie!" and...

Re: Clamshell, Rankin, Monrovia, Pine (NHPS)

Turtle, is there something cool over there? Some cool... canyon... stuff? Or are you kidding and it just sucks everywhere forever? I didn't notice anything particularly enticing, though I can't say I was in the happy and exploratory frame of mind. From the onset, this was about getting the miles do...

Dang! What were the stats on that??? Stout, but not all that bad -- something like 20M, +/-7K. But the off (overgrown?) trail stretches were quite painful, especially in shorts. The initial climb to Clamshell peak reminded me of our good friend Iron -- very steep and loose in places -- but w...

Mt. Lowe Road (2N50)

Does anyone know if stretch of the Mt. Lowe Fireroad between Eaton Saddle and Markham Saddle (passing through the Mueller Tunnel) is open? Re: Supercloud Canyon 5/22/11

Ok, well since it is a drainage of Mt Disappointment, how about Disappointment Canyon then? Turns out that name's already taken for a canyon even closer to the peak. It doesn't appear on Chris's website, as it too was underwhelming. I expect this one may remain a "Hidden Classic" as well...

And in fact, as we hiked up the road, Chris and Bernd kept looking longingly at the canyon west of Supercloud, and imagining that one would be even better. It's not better! (Checked it out with Chris and Keith this morning.) Zero raps, endless rotten rock and scree. Abundant groves of our favorite ...

Brilliant Turtle. Next time you're out that way, venture a little further east to the Coyotes Buttes Permit Area. Not terribly strenuous, but a geologic freak show. It's funny you'd mention Coyote Buttes. I've not been, but one in our group had. He noted that portions of this hike were like a small...

Re: Supercloud Canyon 5/22/11

"Supercloud" is an un-named (on maps) canyon that drains off the northern slope of Mt. Disappointment, near Red Box. It got the nickname after Chris Brennen descended nearby Cloudburst canyon, found it disappointingly lacking in rappels, then discovered its smaller side canyon was much mo...

Matt, you might also want to consider the Sespe Gorge route that Chris Brennen describes on his website. It could be done in one very long day if you are fast over irregular terrain. But I'd advise being prepared to bivy if you attempt to do so. As Norma notes, though, there are closures to deal wit...

It was an epic hike down where I was literally walking on top of bushes they were so thick. I unfortunately cannot find the reference, but I once saw on the web a "Bushwacking Scale" reminiscent of the YDS. Departing the ground as you describe is what defined "Class 5" bushwacki...
