Re: Surviving San Antonio Ridge

I've read about that fabled gully bypass in two different reports. Very discouraging if it doesn't exist. FYI - An experienced group, including Henry Chen and Ben Crowell, tried to use the bypass last year and couldn't do it. They had used the bypass successfully in the past. But this time had to t...

Re: Beyond Ontario - Peak 6857 Solo Overnight (2013-10-12)

Really like the Lichen Tower. Did you climb it? Thanks! It may not be obvious from the photo, but the Lichen Tower is about 1.5m high. The photo actually shows a different face of the same rock I'm climbing in the Bouldering photo. The rock atop the peak was really quite interesting -- lots of whit...

Boy are you good at those selfies. Selfies? Selfies?! Aren't I a little too old for selfies? :P How long can you set your timer for? I have a Canon S90, which has a maximum timer length of 30s. On all but the roughest terrain, I find 30s sufficient for walking/climbing far enough away to make mysel...

Nice trip report, Elwood. :) Saturday morning, October 5th I set off on a modest hike... Right about here is where I start thinking I'm glad I wasn't along for this one... The weather forecast was for hot, and I was looking forward to baking on the largely exposed fire road. About here, I'm 99% sure...

Re: Beyond Ontario - Peak 6857 Solo Overnight (2013-10-12)

Did you see any signs of previous visitors beyond Ontario? Register, ducks, clipped branches, etc? Very few. On the whole it is one of the most lightly impacted regions I've seen in the San Gabriels. Between Ontario Peak and what I labelled "Ridge End", there was a faint trail in places. ...

Damn dude, nice trip and awesome trip report. You and Moose Tracks write the most literary TRs I've ever read. You've got a gift with words. Thanks Uncle Rico... I don't write in this style very often, much less on a public forum, so it does feel like "putting myself out there" a bit. You...

Thanks for the TR Uncle Rico!

I've always heard about the boulders atop Pacifico, and have considered heading there for some uncrowded climbing. Nice to get a closer look at what's up there.

This is a slightly different photo trip report - all the photos are photospheres (Android's 360 degree photo capability). Very cool... thanks for capturing these places in a new (to the forum) way. Out of curiosity, how do you perform the capture? Does the app walk you through a prescribed series o...

Great trip report Jim... Note that the topo map is wrong . The topo map places the junction far lower. Nope. Switch to satellite view, and you can see the junction clearly. The topo map also labels the trail on the east side of the mountain as "MT LOWE WEST TRAIL." Um, no. Oddly enough, th...

Beyond Ontario - Peak 6857 Solo Overnight (2013-10-12)

When poring over topos of the San Gabriels, Peak 6857 had often caught my eye. A lonely perch well beyond the end of Ontario Ridge, surely it would offer commanding views of the basin. Yet in the eyes of the USGS, it didn't even merit a name. The scarcity of information offered in an old forum threa...

Help ID Tracks in Sand?

On a trip through the Right Fork of North Creek in Zion National Park a few years ago, I noticed some remarkably clean and well-defined tracks in the sand . I've not been able to identify them with any certainty. They look much like the front feet of a variety of critters including beaver and racoon...

There is a time-delay of a week or so where you go from thinking "that was dumb" to "that was fun!". I think I agree with this, but Fish Fork is in my opinion right on the boundary between Type II and Type III fun . if you weren't exhausted and carrying a bunch of stuff That's e...

HJ, were you able to find out anything about being able to drive to Pacifico? Friends of mine hiked there from the Alder Saddle side Friday night. Re: Chantry Flat Backpacking Loop - Anyone done this one?

That looks like a reasonable plan to me. Though as AW notes, it could be quite warm... so pack light, with the exception of lots of water carrying capacity. Escape is never that far away on the route, and it is mostly well-traveled, so going a little bit lighter in the way of clothing and shelter pr...

Two big rapps, first one was 370ft, second was 350ft. We got a core shot on the second rappel. So, we had to pass it 200ft up in the air. It was uncomfortable, to say the least. Yikes! A few questions from someone trying to understand this a bit better... please don't take them as criticism...

By the way, check out Michel Digonnet's description of Bad Canyon in "Hiking Death Valley". I keep hoping one of our canyoneers will take on it's 200 foot dryfall. A photo from Bad Canyon of a smaller (but much more aesthetic) dryfall down canyon from the 200 foot dryfall you mention. htt...

Everyday, you're looking at the numbers incorrectly. I hope someone with more statistical skills or evidence-based means can chime in.
