Missing Dog?

Headed up Baldy at around 6:00PM on Saturday, my friend Brent and I encountered a group of hikers looking for a lost terrier. We took a phone number, but did not see any signs of the the dog higher on the peak. However, while passing time at the Snowcrest Lodge while waiting for our return fro...

Re: Vivian Creek: Closed. Falling trees!

Gate to the Vivian Creek parking area was shut "closed for the season". I bumped into this gate on Saturday as well, with permit in hand, at 11pm, in the middle of a Triple Crown attempt. Needless to say that was a rather rude surprise. My immediate reaction was the same as Elwood's -- &q...

Nice pictures and trip report! Turns out I was just one day ahead of you guys -- I went through on Saturday. Though as I was by myself I didn't have the option for a car shuttle and had to get back to the IHC trailhead the honest way. :P Like you and Matt I'd only done the stretch of MFLC up to the ...

Re: Tahquitz Traditional mountain rock climbing 9-15-2010

Very nice... thanks for posting the report. I desperately need to get out to Tahquitz before the snows arrive. The Trough is definitely the stoutest 5.0 I've ever climbed! I had to z-rig a fellow climber over the "crux" just below Pine Tree Ledge. He frustratedly remarked that he should cr...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

Richard K, where exactly is the pipe located at the camp? Elwood and I were through there yesterday as well, but could not locate the pipe. Simonov, do you consider the water from Columbine safe to drink without filtering? I'd think so, given that it's coming directly out of the ground, but would li...

I'd highly recommend it to anyone...just make sure you're not afraid of the dark :P . Got to see nature at its best (owl fly by really close), with tons of stars above your head. Cool temps too. I couldn't agree more! A few weeks back I had planned a long hike on a Saturday with forecast highs of 8...

The photos are beautiful - what camera do you use, and how much Photoshopping? Thanks! I have a Canon S90, a "high-end point and shoot". I used Canon DPP to gently adjust the levels (usually adding a bit more mid-range contrast) of the RAW images and then used Photoshop to rotate and crop...

2010-05-20 Escalante

Returned Monday from an amazing trip to Escalante with friends Scott, Ira, and Alicia. We pulled off three canyons (Ringtail, Choprock, and Neon) in three days. Choprock has a nasty reputation owing to a dual fatality that occurred there in 2005. (A team of two canyoneers dropped into a frigid pool ...

Animal Tracks?

Western Wallflower?

Can anyone confirm whether this is in fact a Western Wallflower? My searches of the Internets suggests that it is Erysimum capitatum ssp. lompocense but the pictures I'm finding are not an exact match. I'm new to the wildflower game and don't have a good sense of how much variation there is even wit...

Re: Anyone ever see a ringtail?

One visited our camp while we were sleeping out in Fall Canyon in DV NP a few years ago. My friend Adam awoke when a critter he described as "a squirrel or chihuahua with a racoon's tail" began digging through his backpack (which lay just a few feet from his head). He got a good look at it...

It was in pretty good shape, with a little brush in a few places and an eroded trailbed in a few others. But easy going the whole way. Elwood was kind enough to clip back some yucca to make it easier for the next guy.

Thanks for the trip report and pictures Elwood! I've also put an Allison Gulch Slideshow up on Flickr. This was my first time through Allison Gulch. It's a bit off the beaten path for most local canyoneers, but should not be overlooked, IMHO, especially if you can catch it while it's flowing nicely....

Re: Allison Mine - Allison Gulch

I'm curious about what appears to be a waterproof rucksack--is that de rigueur among the canyoneering crowd? Not quite de rigueur , but very common, yes. It's actually not waterproof, but rather just designed to shed water efficiently. (Things that need to stay dry are typically enclosed in a dry s...

I saw a cave on my way up yesterday - did you have a probe inserted near the head of the cave? Yes, the probe was ours. We'd inserted it during the digging process to ensure that we didn't get too close to the surface (and compromise the structure of the cave). It entered the cave about where the e...

The main issue with this drop is the rope tends to get damaged on the last 250-300ft free-hanging section. By the time Suzanne (labeled in the photo two posts above) finished rapelling, this is what the rope looked like... https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/gallery.myff.org/gallery/722620/s_cor...
