12/27/10 - Mt. Baldy - Fail

The plan was to hike up the Ski Hut trail, but the road was closed and cars were backed up all the way to the village. I decided to go up Bear Canyon knowing that I may not top out since I got a late start. I passed up 8 hikers or so and at ~8200 ft. or so found myself at the front of the line. That...

Beautiful and very scary. I usually hike solo and I can only imagine the kind of fear three mountain lions would evoke.

Nice Pics! This hike is on my "to do" list, looks like route finding will be a challenge, maybe first time out I'll only go half way and do a bit of exploring.

Mount Islip/S and M Hawkins, 5/25/10

Got a late start and parked at Islip Saddle. Only car there. Headed up the PCT and after 1 mile I went right on the forest road that runs along Mount Islip. X-country up to the summit. Still a bit of snow up there. Took the ridge down to Windy Gap and followed the Crystal Lake CG trail half way down...

Watch your step!

I don't think it's a rattler. Didn't make a sound and was very docile. It didn't budge and I had to go around. This was on the trail to Sunset Peak.

Horned Lizard / Big Dump

Encl. are a couple of pictures from this weekend. First one is a Horned Lizard, this is the first one I have seen. Second one is a big dump, Bear? Mountain Lion? My partners boot is next to it. What do you think? https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/gallery.myff.org/gallery/750434/Horned Lizard.JP...

Re: new Delorme GPS with wireless spot meesenger module

Thank you for posting this. I was thinking about buying a Garmin Oregon 550t, but I'll wait for this unit to come out. It has the topo feature that I want and the spot feature with messaging capability is a tremendous bonus. I know that I'll have to bivy in the woods sooner or later because of darkn...

You are absolutely correct. This whole side of Harvard looks very dangerous, lots of loose rocks ready to come down. Not a place to be when it rains.

Boulders like that can can ruin your whole day and I don't think a helmet would do much for you. Rattlesnake Peak, 2/16/10

Started at 8 a.m. and was planning to do a loop, up the east ridge, down the south ridge. My first time on this trail, so the tunnels were interesting. Missed the turn-off for the east ridge, there was supposed to be a duck, but no such luck. Headed up were I thought I could catch the ridge, but had...

Thanks for the info.
All I wanted to know is what thecurrent conditions are and the first reply gave me that info. I have no intentions of going up there without the right equipment putting myself and others in peril.

Is it possible to hike these peaks without crampons at this time?
