Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

The biggest benefit is not putting all that moisture into your sleeping pad. Yeah, you might have a point there. With a "traditional" (self inflating) Thermarest, I just store it with the valve open. It's my NeoAir that I wonder about about. You can't air them out as easily. What's the im...

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

Ok for 1.5 oz its not bad. It took two times to fill the large neoair. For .99¢ I will carry it just for that little bit of ease to inflate the pad. as always YMMV 8) Well, I used the Instaflator last weekend. Four nights in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. Two pads inflated per night. Two rounds of i...

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

I just read about the Instaflator and the microburst on another forum, and I thought you might want to check them out. Now, I don't mind blowing up air mattresses. I usually read my book while lying in the tent, slowly filling the pads one breath at a time, never breathing too fast or getting lighth...

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

Buying two and returning one after trying them out on your carpet at home seems fair enough; it's basically in "as new" condition. Also, I think you'll probably like that trekker pad. It appears to be made from stronger material than the x-lite. Did you get the 25x47 version? That sounds l...

Re: Lets talk sleeping pads

My wife and I have the Big Agnes Insulated pads (along with the Big Agnes double sleeping bag) and I'd recommend getting the insulated version, or you'll feel like you're trying to heat the entire surface of the ground under the pad, thanks to air convection inside the pads. The Big Agnes version ha...

Re: Little Jimmy, first backpack trip in 25 years...

Nice TR! It's always good to see someone (re-)discover backpacking. I camped at Little Jimmy once myself, about ten years ago, and that water was truly excellent. I'm thinking of heading back there soon, just to bag some peaks and day-hike around, just like you did. And I hope you can join me in bec...

Three cold nights at Kelly Camp, Memorial Day Weekend 2012

OK, maybe it was one really cold night followed by two fairly cold nights. But it sure was cold that first night, on Saturday evening. The Mt Baldy Village weather station reported a low of 37 degrees (at 4100 feet elevation) so it was probably about 12-15 degrees lower up at Kelly Camp at ~7800 fee...

This past weekend up on Timber Mountain I found a couple of stickers advertising the site and thought I'd come back by and check it out a little more in depth. Great site! Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

I was there on Memorial Day weekend (ten days ago) and the spring was running fine, flowing at about 600 ml per minute (two minutes for a very full nalgene bottle). There is also a small pool/seep in the ravine 100 feet from the spring a bit further from camp. I saw a deer drinking from it.

Re: Dawson Saddle to Copter Ridge(19 May) & Ross Mtn 26 May)

I didn't see any register/log on either Hawkins or Throop, is somebody going round removing them? Maybe these peaks need the heavy-duty bolted-down stainless steel boxes like on Telegraph Peak. With beer-bottle openers! As for me, I always like to check out peak registers, and why someone would fee...

Re: Liquid Refreshment on Ontario Peak

There are identical stainless steel bottle openers bolted to the registers of both Timber Mountain and Telegraph Peak, so now you need to hike the Three Tee's Trail to check these useful items out as well. While remembering the Boy Scout Motto, of course: Be Prepared! :)

Thanks, Jim! Nice to see you back in the saddle, posting away once again. As for your question, no there weren't too many mosquitoes at Columbine. Oh, I forgot to mention this in my original post: On our way out, on Monday July 18, we met some folks hiking up the trail who had a weimaraner as their "leader". A bit later, we found a camera in the middle of the trail. I probably should have left it there, but I didn't. And I probably s...

San Gorgonio Wilderness, San Bernardino Peak Trail - July 16

We hiked up the San Bernadino Peak Trail from Angeles Oaks. Camped one night in Columbine Camp (tons of water in the stream running through camp). Camped the next night at Limber Pine Bench, where there were gusty winds all night, but seriously excellent views all around. Limber Pine Spring was runn...

Back in my late teens (when the drinking age was eighteen) three friends and I went on our first spring backpack trip of the year. I was there three weeks ago, and the pipe was barely dripping, but the water was flowing out of the ground above the pipe, and filling the pool quite nicely. We filtered our water from the pool. Icehouse Canyon, Kelly Camp, Ontario, Cucamonga 6/19/10

We woke up Saturday at 3am and finally got out the door at 4:30 for the two and a half hour drive from San Diego to Icehouse Canyon.
